Kidnapped Nigerian Girl Who Refused To Renounce Her Christian Faith Pleads For Help

By  Kassy Dillon

A 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was kidnapped in February by one of the world’s deadliest terrorist organizations, Boko Haram, reportedly called on her government to save her in a new 35-second audio recording, according to local outlets CBS News reports.

Leah Sharibu was abducted from a hostel with more than 100 other school girls but is allegedly the only one still held by the terrorists because she refused to renounce her Christian faith and convert to Islam.

The unverified recording, accompanied with a picture of her in a hijab and sitting on a mat, was reportedly sent to local media on Monday and features Leah pleading for help in the Hausa language. “I plead with… the government and the president to have pity for me and save me from my situation,” she said faltering, leaving some to believe that she was reading something prepared for her.

If the audio is authentic, this would be the first evidence proving she is alive since she was kidnapped.

“It really is her voice,” Nathan Shairbu, Leah’s father, told BBC Pidgin. “Before, I thought she wasn’t even alive.”

“I’m really encouraged that I heard the words of my favourite daughter,” Nathan added.

Nathan also claims that both Christians and Muslims are praying for his daughter, and the the family is “pleading for the government to do more.” “We are very, very sad in the family,” he said. “I hope they will put more pressure concerning her release.”

“I thought she might have been killed since we were told by those released that Boko Haram kept her because she is a Christian. I can only imagine the way they would have treated her,” Nathan told CNN.

The spokesman for Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari claimed the voice was being analyzed by the secret service and that “nothing will be spared in bringing all of our girls home.” He added that the president “will not rest until all of them are freed.”
