Kaepernick Won’t Stand For Anthem, Gets Relentlessly Booed

Colin Kaepernick and San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid knelt rather than stood during the national anthem Thursday night, on the very night the game against the San Diego Chargers featured the annual Salute to the Military. Kaepernick took a knee to protest racism against blacks while the anthem was sung by Petty Offer 1st Class Steven Powell from the U.S. Navy, who happens to be black.

Although only scattered boos accompanied Kaepernick’s insult, when he entered the game much louder boos erupted. According to CBS Sports, “The booing of Kaepernick started as soon as he ran on Thursday night and didn’t stop until 49ers coach Chip Kelly pulled him from the game at the beginning of the second half. Chargers fans were relentless with Kaepernick, booing him on all 34 plays that he participated in during the 49ers 31-21 win.”

Reid, who was not in uniform, had already publicly supported Kaepernick’s actions.

The Salute to the Military included dozens of military members unfurling an oversized flag, pregame music from the Marine Band San Diego, halftime recognition of Vietnam War veterans, and numerous injured soldiers in attendance who had been invited by the Chargers.

Meanwhile, in Oakland, Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane imitated Kaepernick, sitting on the bench as the national anthem was played before Seattle’s game against the Raiders.

Last Sunday, Kaepernick had blustered, “I’m going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me this is something that has to change. When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.”
