“The View” co-host Joy Behar wants to see a battle royale at tonight’s Democratic Party presidential debate, particularly between Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and the openly socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
“It’s getting a little boring to me,” Behar said on the show Thursday, according to Fox News. “I would like to see Elizabeth Warren put Bernie [Sanders] in a headlock. I really would enjoy that.”
Warren and Sanders have not met each other on the debate stage. Thursday night’s debate will be the first time the pair compete for the far-left progressive base. Should Warren come out ahead, her position as the Democratic Party frontrunner will increase exponentially in light of recent polls indicating her gains on former Vice President Joe Biden. A new poll by Investor’s Business Daily found that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has pulled to within striking distance of front-runner Joe Biden, movement that follows the former vice president’s repeated gaffs and comes amid glowing coverage of Warren by major media outlets.
IBD’s newest survey of the Democratic primary candidates and their potential head-to-head matchups against Trump provides some notable results. First, Warren is increasingly poised to dethrone Biden.
The poll found that Warren has surged by 7% since August, now winning the support of 24% of registered Democrats and independents who lean Democratic (up from 17%).
At the same time, Biden’s support among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents has declined by 2%, dropping from 30% to 28%. That puts Warren at just 4% behind the front-runner — a dramatic 9% reduction of the gap she faced in August.
In the same episode of “The View” on Thursday, Behar said that while she adores Elizabeth Warren, she fears that Americans may not vote for her.
“I love Elizabeth Warren very much and I think she would make a really good president, but I don’t believe … this country would vote for her because of two things,” Behar said. “Number one: she believes in Medicare-for-all without private insurance and — I’ve said before — American’s don’t like you to take anything away from them. We like having that … she needs to take that out and say, ‘well you can have it if you want.'”
Behar went on to say that Democrats should not let Trump get away with castigating the party as “open borders” extremists.
“Democrats want legal immigration,” said Behar. “They want people to come in legally — the way we’ve done since this country began … and I think that those things need to be clear. Otherwise, Elizabeth is not going to capture the heart of the heartland.”
In the previous debate, Senator Warren did indicate she wanted to “decriminalize” border crossings while maintaining border security.
“The problem is that, right now, the criminalization statute is what gives Donald Trump the ability to take children away from their parents,” she said. “It’s what gives him the ability to lock up people at our borders. We need to continue to have border security, and we can do that, but what we can’t do is not live our values.”
