ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel last week mocked first lady Melania Trump’s Slovenian accent, and a lot of people are offended.
An online petition calling for a boycott of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” has topped a goal of 50,000 signatures.
“On Monday night, left-wing host Jimmy Kimmel showed his true bigotry by mocking the way our First Lady was reading a children’s book during the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House,” the petition said. “In the past he has claimed to be loving and accepting of all immigrants, but he openly made fun of her accent and his crowd laughed along. He even reenacted the way she says ‘This and That.'”
On Sunday, the authors of the petition posted this: “[UPDATE: WE HIT OUR GOAL! The petition will be in the mail FIRST THING Monday morning].” Organizers say the petition will be sent to “the front door of Disney/ABC Studios in Burbank,” California.
“Let’s send a message that these attacks on our First Lady will NOT be tolerated!”
Kimmel mocked Melania’s accent, showing a clip of the first lady reading a book to children on the White House lawn during the Easter Egg Roll event on Monday. “Dees and dat,” Kimmel joked, of her pronunciation of “this or that.”
Kimmel also made a joke about the couple’s son, saying President Trump “even met a nice kid named Barron who he really liked.”
Kimmel showed a clip in which the president praised Melania for helping set up the event, then said, “Not a chance she did one thing to help set that up.”
Fox News host Sean Hannity has criticized Kimmel, saying it was “unfair of Kimmel to criticize Melania Trump because the first lady is in a vulnerable position,” Fox News reported.
“The first lady of the United States is not going to get into a feud with a late-night, low-rated talk show host like Jimmy Kimmel,” he said. “She can’t. If she does, it’s not going to end well for her. So, he knows he has a free, open target.”
Outrage spread over Twitter.
One noted that there were few jokes about former first lady Michelle Obama.
