Jimmy Kimmel once again turned his late-night show into a platform to trash conservatives, this time the hot topic was religious liberty, particularly a person’s right not to participate in something that violates their deeply held religious beliefs.
The emphatically left-wing host took the opportunity of a yet another instance of Colorado baker Jack Phillips being sued for refusing to bake a cake for something that runs counter to his faith: a “transgender transition cake.” The cake was ordered by a self-described transgender attorney who Phillips says he believes is behind a series of harassing requests, including baking cakes with sexually explicit messages and Satanic symbols. The Daily Caller provides some more background:
On the same day the high court agreed to review the Masterpiece case, an attorney named Autumn Scardina called Phillips’ shop and asked him to create a cake celebrating a sex transition. The caller asked that the cake include a blue exterior and a pink interior, a reflection of Scardina’s transgender identity. Phillips declined to create the cake, given his religious conviction that sex is immutable, while offering to sell the caller other pre-made baked goods. In the months that followed, the bakery received requests for cakes featuring marijuana use, sexually explicit messages, and Satanic symbols. One solicitation submitted by email asked the cake shop to create a three-tiered white cake depicting Satan licking a functional 9 inch dildo. Phillips believes Scardina made all these requests.
Though Phillips won his previous case involving a gay wedding cake, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission allowed the “transition cake” suit to move ahead.
Kimmel used the case as an opportunity paint Phillips as a hypocritical bigot.
“It’s funny because this is a guy who spends all day, every day, meticulously designing flowers out of icing. His whole life is gay, okay?” Kimmel said, as highlighted by Mediaite. “I don’t know if the wrong cake might bring that to life or what.”
Mediaite also notes that Kimmel then mocked the “totally straight cake baker” over his appearance. “You would think that someone who looks like the Reba McEntire version of Colonel Sanders would be more sympathetic to gender identity issues,” he said.
Kimmel, keeping it as classy and “inclusive” as ever.
