On the eve of Ireland voting on whether or not to enshrine abortion as a constitutional right, the country’s far-left Prime Minister condemned Ireland’s pro-life record as being “a legacy of shame.”
The abortion activists in Ireland could not possibly have a greater ally than Prime Minister Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who has been pushing a far-left agenda ever since his ascendancy in 2015 that saw the overturn of traditional marriage. Leading up to the vote on overturning the country’s Eighth Amendment, the PM has aggressively pushed the pro-abortion agenda.
“There has been in Ireland a legacy of shame in many ways,” Varadkar said, the Irish Examiner reports. “The fact that 170,000 women have had to travel, sometimes in secret, to another jurisdiction to end their pregnancies.”
“I hope that a Yes vote will help to lift that stigma and help to take away that legacy of shame that exists in our society,” he continued.
The PM also claimed that abortion will make Ireland a “little bit more compassionate and a little bit more understanding.”

Currently, Irish laws protect pregnant mothers and their unborn babies equally. And Ireland is one of the safest places in the world for pregnant mothers and their babies.
Pro-lifers estimate that the Eighth Amendment has saved approximately 100,000 unborn babies’ lives from abortion.
Irish doctors have been some of the most outspoken advocates against abortion, saying the repeal of the Eighth Amendment would do nothing whatsoever to help Irish women.
People with disabilities and their families also are expressing fears that legalized abortion could lead to wide-spread, deadly discrimination against unborn babies.
The pro-abortion crowd in Ireland is slowly losing ground; they no longer have a sure-fire victory on May 25 when the referendum which will decide whether or not abortion should be a constitutional right is voted on.
According to a new poll from Reuters, the gap between those who wish to repeal the Eighth Amendment and those who wish to retain it is slowly narrowing.
“The Irish Times/MRBI poll found that 44% would vote to repeal an amendment to the constitution that enshrines the equal right to life of the mother and her unborn child, with 32% opposed,” reports Reuters.
A full 17% of Irish voters still remain undecided with another 5% refusing to vote and another 2% refusing to answer. Of those still undecided, 31% said they were “leaning toward” repealing while 24% said they were leaning toward retaining. This could very well be an extremely close vote.
