The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Hollywood Reacts To Mid-Term Results

The Democrats took back the U.S. House in the mid-terms on Tuesday night, but not by the margins they expected, quelling all projections of any intended blue wave.

Though Republicans gained three (possibly four) seats in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday and lost just a little over 30 seats in the U.S. House (nearly half of what President Obama lost in 2010), Hollywood progressives like Michael Moore are celebrating the day as a triumph.

“But the best news is that once again we WON the MOST votes throughout the whole country! In all the House races combined we got 3 MILLION MORE votes than the Repubs,” said Michael Moore on Twitter. “And TEN MILLION MORE in the Senate races! The majority of Americans rejected Trump and all that he stands for!”

Michael Moore was, of course, referencing the so-called mid-term “popular vote,” which, as noted by The Daily Wire’s Ashe Schow, is a completely absurd talking point:

The popular vote means nothing except in individual races. The person with the most votes wins, and some races get more votes than others and some candidates live in more contested districts than others. Those are all factors. National vote totals play no role.

Complaining about the Senate popular vote is even more asinine in 2018. Democrats had far more senators up for re-election than Republicans, so naturally, there were going to be more Democrat votes even if Republicans gained some seats.

Aaron Blake took down this argument for The Washington Post. Senators represent states, not people, which is why every state gets two — for equal representation no matter the square mileage or population of the state. The House is designed to represent the people.

Other Hollywood people were excited that the Russia collusion witch hunt would go on unimpeded now that Democrats have control of the U.S. House.

“Trumpie…you f***ed big time now. aint no stopping mueller now… you’re on the run. wait, can you run fatso?” said Ellen Barkin on Twitter.

“Very excited the Dems got the House back and this crook will not continue to go unchecked. Good night!!” said Andy Cohen on Twitter.

Other Hollywood celebrities like Debra Messing and Ava DuVernay were raving about victories for intersectionality politics.

“We won the House back and that is something to celebrate. There will be accountability; the checks & balances that our forefathers imagined. Women won all across this country,” tweeted Debra Messing. Ava DuVernay tweeted: “Democrats flipped the house w/ historic wins by women + people of color, some slashing decades-long red strongholds. And 1.4 million formerly incarcerated people have regained the right to vote. Despite gerrymandering + suppression. Something powerful has happened. Believe that.”

Actor Kumail Nanjiani simply declared the night a “#BlueWave.”

Josh Gad tweeted: “To all of those who worked so unbelievably hard to make sure we finally had checks & balances in our country again, a sincere thank u tonight. I am constantly amazed by all of those who are rolling up their sleeves & doing everything that they can do to combat this chaos.”

Sean Astin (yes, Samwise himself) celebrated the victory as well: “I’m deeply relieved that my political party, the Democratic Party will resume leadership of the U.S. House of Representative. The environment will now have some long overdue advocacy in government. And, Congress will start to put a check on this President & his administration,” he tweeted.
