Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich unloaded on special counsel Robert Mueller on Thursday, issuing a series of statements on social media in which he described Mueller as the “tip of the deep state spear” aimed right at President Trump.
Gingrich was responding to the Washington Post’s anonymous source-based bombshell report that Mueller, who has been appointed as special counsel to investigate the ever-changing Russia-Trump collusion accusations, is focusing on potential obstruction of justice charges against the president over his handling of former FBI Director James Comey, Mueller’s colleague and friend.
“WPost headline ‘Trump’s actions now a focus … of Mueller inquiry’. What happened to Russia[/]anti-Trump focus of ‘special’ counsel,” wrote Gingrich in a series of tweets on Thursday. “Should now be clear Mueller is the ‘anti-Trump special counsel’. Karl Rove warns in WSJ oped today ‘special counsels can run amok’.”
Gingrich then described Mueller as a weapon of the deep state, citing his “brazen redefinition” of the focus of the investigation as evidence of the deep state’s belief it can act with impunity.
“Mueller [is] now clearly the [tip] of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency,” he wrote. “Mueller is setting up a dragnet of obstruction, financial questions and every aspect of Trump’s life and his associates lives. [V]ery dangerous … The brazen redefinition of Mueller’s task tells you how arrogant the deep state is and how confident it is it can get away with anything.”
On Wednesday, the Post reported that multiple sources (presumably at the direction of Mueller) revealed that shortly after Trump fired Comey, an “obstruction of justice” inquiry began, which Mueller is now heading up as part of a “widening probe” related to Russia, Trump associates, and, now, apparently the president’s handling of Mueller’s friend:
Five people briefed on the interview requests, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said that Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers’s recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller’s investigators as early as this week. The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy, and it is unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI. …
The obstruction-of-justice investigation of the president began days after Comey was fired on May 9, according to people familiar with the matter. Mueller’s office has taken up that work, and the preliminary interviews scheduled with intelligence officials indicate that his team is actively pursuing potential witnesses inside and outside the government.
The interviews suggest that Mueller sees the question of attempted obstruction of justice as more than just a “he said, he said” dispute between the president and the fired FBI director, an official said.
Gingrich is among several voices on the right calling for the removal of Mueller, whose relationship with Comey is an apparent ethics violation and whose actions so far indicate bias against Trump. Mueller, writes Daily Wire‘s John Nolte, “is not even making a secret of the fact that he intends to try and frame the president.” Instead, he is “pack[ing] his team only with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton loyalists, some of whom maxed out their financial contributions in support of both. One of whom was a lawyer for the slush-fund formerly known as the Clinton Foundation.”
Meanwhile, CNN has filed a lawsuit Thursday to force the FBI to release the memos Comey deliberately leaked in order to trigger the special investigation which his former colleague is now heading up.
