Democratic Delaware state Sen. Sarah McBride, who is the first transgender state senator ever elected, predicted that more people from the LGBT community will be seeking office and that the country will eventually elect a transgender president.

Speaking during a teaser for an interview on “The Carlos Watson Show” that will air Saturday, McBride said, “I think it’s eventually likely that this country will elect an LGBTQ president and eventually a transgender president.”

“I know that we as a community, we as a country, are certainly making progress toward more and more trans people running for office, winning, and serving in positions throughout government at every level,” continued McBride, who used to be the press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign.

McBride went on to say that trans policymakers would provide better perspective for “LGBT equality,” adding, “Obviously we know that if you’re not at the table, then you’re on the menu, as they say.”

Going on to explain how being trans has been eye-opening in other ways, McBride said, “I see very clearly as a trans person how transphobia links with homophobia, how both of those link with misogyny and racism, but then on the flip side how my whiteness shields me from some of the worst discrimination that comes the trans community’s way.”

“I think trans candidates, LGBTQ candidates, women, people of color, what we all bring to the table is this understanding that the longstanding distinction in our politics and economic issues and social issues is a false distinction.”

“The fight for equality for any community isn’t about some abstract moral principle,” McBride explained. “It’s about making sure that everyone can get a job that pays the bills, health care that meets their needs, a quality education that prepares them for the future, and safe communities where every person is treated with dignity.”

Upon addressing the audience during the 2016 Democratic National Convention, McBride became the first transgender person to speak at a major political party’s convention.

“Hillary Clinton won’t be the only woman to make history this Thursday,” Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin said at the time. “When Sarah McBride takes the stage, she will become the first transgender person to speak at a national Democratic or Republican convention. Sarah’s inclusion in Thursday’s program is a significant milestone for our community, and it sends a strong message that transgender people and their voices matter.”

McBride’s interview with Watson comes as some states are passing legislation regarding transgender women competing with biological women in sports. Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee have banned the practice, and Republican West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice earlier this week expressed his intention to sign a similar bill.

The Arkansas State Legislature recently overrode a veto from Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson on a bill that bans giving puberty blockers and hormone treatment to minors.
