An 84-year-old pro-life female activist canvassing for a ballot proposal surrounding abortion laws in Michigan was shot in the back by an unidentified man last week while passing out pamphlets.

Right to Life Michigan, a pro-life non-profit, said in a statement on Saturday that while the elderly woman volunteered her time going door-to-door around her community in Lake Odessa, one interaction left her wounded after leaving a residence during a “heated conversation.”

“The victim does not know the identity or motive of her shooter.” the statement reads. “The victim is still recovering from her gunshot wound and wishes to remain anonymous while the criminal investigation proceeds.”

Michigan State Police have begun investigating the case and will forward the results to the Ionia County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Authorities told Fox News Digital Saturday that the elderly woman was shot after a “verbal altercation while she was passing out pamphlets” and would later drive herself to the Lake Odessa Police Department.

She was transported to an area hospital for treatment and later released.

“We’re glad the victim is recovering, and our volunteers will continue knocking doors on Proposal 3,” Chris Gast, a Right to Life of Michigan official, told Fox News Digital on Saturday.

Proposal 3, otherwise known as the so-called “Right to Reproductive Freedom Initiative,” will allow the state to regulate abortion after fetal viability but not prohibit abortions if necessary to protect the mother’s life or physical or mental health.

Michigan voters will have the chance to vote on the measure in the upcoming midterm election later this year.

The attack on the woman follows the U.S Supreme Court’s historic decision last summer to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case that legalized abortion across the United States.

Abortion enthusiasts and their political supporters have signaled disturbing rhetoric towards those who stand for the sanctity of life, which has unleashed a string of attacks on pregnancy centers and other pro-life locations.

Within days of the nation’s highest court reversing the controversial ruling, pro-choice groups in Michigan allegedly vandalized and damaged other pro-life organizations.

Last summer, a pro-abortion group allegedly smashed the front door and shattered multiple windows of an office building shared by Jackson Right to Life and a Michigan Republican Tim Walberg’s campaign office.

Tagged in pink ink on the side of the building that read a grim warning to pro-life activists threatening their safety if abortion isn’t protected.
