Democrats Make ‘Ridiculous’ Demand Of Trump’s SCOTUS Pick Kavanaugh

In a demand that Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) has called “ridiculous,” Democrats said Tuesday that they are going to pressure Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to recuse himself from any future cases involving Robert Mueller’s investigation.

The Democrats’ dead-on-arrival demand stems from Kavanaugh’s 2009 law review article in which he suggests that Congress should propose legislation that would exempt a sitting president from “criminal prosecution and investigation.”

As Politico reports, several Democratic Senators have voiced their concern over Kavanaugh’s belief that presidents shouldn’t be the targets of “witch hunts,” as Trump calls Mueller’s investigation:

“I don’t think he should be on the court, and you can be sure that me and my colleagues on the Democratic side are going to be asking if he will recuse himself, should he be confirmed,” Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), considered a potential Trump challenger in 2020, told reporters.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), another member of the Judiciary panel, agreed that Kavanaugh should recuse himself from any cases “that involve President Trump’s personal financial dealings or the special counsel.”

Even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is getting in on the pre-recusal demand, suggesting that Trump chose Kavanaugh precisely because he thought he “would best protect him from the Mueller investigation.”

Sen. Cornyn slammed his Democratic colleagues for the “ridiculous” demand. “We’ve got to go through the process, and [the issue] may all be a dim memory by the time this is over with,” he told reporters Tuesday.
