Condoleezza Rice Weighs In On Alabama Senate Election

   DailyWire.com

On Monday, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice issued a statement to AL.com about the Tuesday election between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones.

This week’s special election will be one of the most significant in Alabama’s history. As a native daughter, I remain – at heart – an Alabaman who loves our state and its devotion to faith, family, and country.

… I encourage you to take a stand for our core principles and for what is right. These critical times require us to come together to reject bigotry, sexism, and intolerance.

It is imperative for Americans to remain focused on our priorities and not give way to side shows and antics. I know that Alabamans need an independent voice in Washington. But we must also insist that our representatives are dignified, decent, and respectful of the values we hold dear.

Please exercise your right to vote – a privilege won by the sacrifices of our ancestors. Sustain the central ideals and values that make our country a beacon for freedom and justice for the sake of Alabama and for the good of the United States of America.

Rice made reference to growing up in Alabama when promoting her recent book, “Democracy: The Long Road to Freedom.” Speaking about bringing democracy to other nations, Rice said:

That first American Constitution counted my ancestors as three-fifths of a man. That first American Constitution didn’t provide my father the right to vote in 1952 in Birmingham, Alabama. But I took an oath of allegiance to that same Constitution as a black woman Secretary of State with a Jewish woman Supreme Court Justice swearing me in. Democracy takes time, and we have to be a little bit more patient, and a little bit more helpful in speaking out for those who are still trying to get there.

Although Rice didn’t endorse either Alabama Senate candidate, one could be forgiven for thinking that the intended target of her statement regarding “bigotry, sexism, and intolerance” was Roy Moore.
