Leftist MSNBC host Chris Matthews said on Tuesday that if socialist Bernie Sanders wins the Democratic nomination for president that Democrats will lose 49 states to President Donald Trump.
While talking about how the other candidates are not attacking Sanders’ ideology, Matthews said, “They’re just pandering to the Bernie people and you know what pandering gets you? Nothing. It certainly doesn’t get you respect.”
“They’ve got to get out there and say I disagree with socialism; I believe in the markets; I think he’s wrong,” Matthew said. “I think you’ll never get it done and this country will never go that direction, by the way we’ll lose forty nine states.”

Earlier in the interview, Matthews said, “I hope that the candidates who have been telegraphing their punches against Sanders, Senator Sanders, are actually going to deliver them. I mean I hope they actually do what they promised to do. Are they gonna go after him about the bad behavior of Bernie supporters or not? Is this how they do things in Denmark? I mean this is a preview of coming attractions, these people. He says he can’t control them but I think he’s going to be called to account by the other candidates because they seem to have a hesitancy or a fear of going after his ideology, going after his self declared socialism, or even about the do-ability of all the things he says he’s gonna do in a Congress that’s split right now.”
“Everybody knows half the US Senate’s run by Republicans, it’ll be half run by Republicans next time, and it takes 60 votes to get any of this stuff through and yet nobody just says the obvious, ‘Bernie you’re full of it,'” Matthews added. “None of this is going to get passed, you’re gonna be a miserable president frustrated for the first day because you’re not gonna get Medicare for all, you’re not gonna get free college tuition for public universities, you’re not gonna get [rid] of all student loans. None of this is gonna happen and you’re just gonna sit there and stew in it. So why don’t they bring that up? I do not understand why they don’t bring that up.”
Earlier this month, Matthews went off on Sanders because of Sanders’ socialist ideology, saying in rant that “it doesn’t frickin work!”
“…the issue of this campaign, it is that word ‘socialism,’” Matthews said. “Some people like it, younger people like it, those of us like me, who grew up in the Cold War and saw some aspects of it, if they’re visiting places like Vietnam, like I have, [and seeing countries] like Cuba, being there, I’ve seen what socialism’s like, I don’t like it, OK?” Matthews said. “It’s not only not free, it doesn’t frickin work!”

“I think the Democratic Party has to figure out its ideology,” Matthews continued. “A lot us will be sorting things out if the Democratic Party runs a socialist candidate. That’s a change from the Democratic Party. The Democrat Party has been to the left of the Republican Party on the issue of mixed capitalism, more social programs, they push social security, Medicare, Medicaid, enormously popular programs.”
“I have my views on the word ‘socialist,’ and I’ll be glad to share them with you in private and they go back to the early 1950s. I have an attitude about them, I remember the Cold War, I have an attitude toward Castro,” Matthews continued. “I believe if Castro and the reds had won the Cold War there would have been executions in Central Park and I might have been one of the ones getting executed and certain other people would be there cheering, OK?”
“So I have a problem with people who took the other side,” Matthews continued. “I don’t know who Bernie supports over these years. I don’t know what he means by ‘socialism.’”
“One week, it’s Denmark, we’re going to be like Denmark,” Matthews said in a voice mocking Sanders. “Okay, that’s harmless. That’s basically a capitalist country with a lot of good social welfare programs. Denmark’s harmless.”
