CBS President Rips ‘Rathergate’ Film: More Like ‘Half Truth’

By  Aaron Bandler

The president and CEO of CBS Corp is not happy with the new Robert Redford-starring film Truth, which portrays the network as a villain in the “Rathergate” scandal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Moonves and his staff at CBS were recently overheard blasting the movie as “half truth.” Despite the reported challenge to the film’s accuracy, Moonves has indicated that he will not ask for any significant changes and will not publicly attack the film.

Truth (dir. James Vanderbilt) tells the story of former CBS News anchor and “60 Minutes” correspondent Dan Rather’s debunked 2004 story based on fake documents allegedly proving that President George W. Bush avoided serving in Vietnam during his time at the Texas National Guard and was given preferential treatment because his father, George H.W. Bush, was a congressman.

Shortly after the documents were indisputably proven to be forged, Rather was fired. The incident was dubbed “Rathergate.”

Critics say Truth, featuring Redford as Rather and Cate Blanchett as “60 Minutes” producer Mary Mapes, distorts the story by depicting CBS as appeasing the Bush administration and firing Rather, leading the viewer to believe that Rather was right all along.

The movie is based off the book Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power by Mapes, who also lost her job at CBS because of the embarrassing episode.

Unsurprisingly, Rather is a big fan of Truth and reportedly choked up at the premiere of the movie. “Naturally I was pleased, and pleasantly surprised,” Rather said to THR. “This film is very accurate. A film called ‘Truth’ should be accurate.”

Rather continues to be in a state of denial about the incident, insisting that the documents were “fake, but accurate.” In an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit, Rather claimed that it was never proven that the documents were forged.

“The whole documents argument was a camouflage – what was described in the documents was factual,” Rather wrote. “As for the trap argument — could have been, might have been but nobody has ever proven that. What I know, all I know, is we reported a true story. Whatever you think of the documents, facts are facts.”

Back in 2004, CBS and Rather both admitted that the documents could not be verified.

Rather sued CBS in 2007 for supposedly failing to thoroughly investigate his discredited story. Naturally, he was laughed out of court.

Truth will be shown in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 16.

Here is a Entertainment Weekly exclusive teaser for the film:
