CANDACE OWENS: Why I Launched The Campaign Against Chrissy Teigen

It’s time to make the Left play by its own rules.

If you’ve been following me over the past few years, you know that I talk a lot about the subject of young women and the difficulty of growing up in this society. It takes a while for young girls to properly find their footing. There’s so much self-doubt, awkwardness and angst. Do I look okay? Am I pretty enough? Am I smart enough? Does he like me back? It’s tough and some people go out of their way to make it tougher.

This weekend I finally got around to watching the much-discussed documentary “Framing, Britney Spears.” As the film documents, the media was shameless in their attempts to make revenue off the young singer. Worst of the offenders was Diane Sawyer, who attempted to draw blood from Britney in order to drive her to tears all for ratings. With the cameras rolling, Sawyer deliberately made Spears break down, telling the young girl that there’s a parent out in the world that wishes she could shoot her. The idea was that she was such a disgusting display of what it means to be a woman, that there are people in the world who just wish she were dead. Britney young and vulnerable at this time predictably burst into tears as Sawyer looked on stone-faced, content with accomplishing her apparent goal: publicly breaking Britney Spears.

One question overwhelmed me while watching the shameless Sawyer interview: Where were the adults in the room? Why did adults allow this to happen? Why didn’t someone sit up and say that what Sawyer and the rest of the media were doing was wrong? Why didn’t someone speak out and decry the evil of trying to break the spirit of a young girl.

Which leads me to Chrissy Teigen. If you’ve been following me on social media over the last week, you’ve seen that I’ve led a campaign for people to examine the long history of abuse that Teigen has directed at young women. We’re not talking about mean tweets we’re talking about Teigen harassing teen girls and even encouraging suicide.

One of Teigen’s numerous targets was Courtney Stodden. For those who haven’t followed her story, at just 16 years old, Courtney married a 51-year-old man and became a celebrity virtually overnight. She was groomed for this disturbing relationship, and the cameras couldn’t look away. During that time, Chrissy Teigen, then in her mid-20s an adult woman in a relationship with an A-list celebrity, John Legend messaged Courtney and encouraged her to commit suicide. Teigen publicly said the same, by the way, telling Stodden via tweet that she fantasized about her taking a “dirt nap.”

In the media’s eyes, this disgusting behavior was fine for years. Stodden has repeatedly spoken out, telling those who will listen that while she was young and vulnerable, Teigen tried to convince her to kill herself. But the supposedly pro-woman, compassionate media didn’t care.

And it turns out Courtney wasn’t the only one. Chrissy also did this to Lindsay Lohan, mocking her after Lohan attempted to slit her own wrists. Teigen said the troubled actress likely adds a few more slits to her wrists” every time she sees Emma Stone, another A-list red-headed actress. Teigen also said she wished Sarah Palin would “shoot herself in the face.”

This has been allowed because, apparently for years, there have been no adults in the room. Well, someone must stand up and say this is unacceptable. We’re not talking about bullying. We’re not talking about cancel culture. This is not about punishing someone for their political views. We are talking about the encouragement of suicide. This is an issue of both morality and, potentially, criminality. In some states, encouraging self-harm can be punishable in the court of law.

The Left demands people get canceled for their ideology. All we on the Right want are appropriate consequences for destructive actions.

By no means do I want Chrissy Teigen to be silenced or punished in perpetuity. I want her to learn a lesson, because what I believe as a conservative is that actions do have consequences. What I’m calling for is accountability culture, consequence culture. I’m calling for a time where it’s no longer acceptable for celebrities and other elites to be allowed to get away with everything no matter the damage they do to the most vulnerable in our society. Being a liberal celebrity has meant never having to say you’re sorry. Not anymore.
