Sen. Lindsey Graham has a way with words. And when the South Carolina Republican is looking to strike, he rarely misses his target.
Graham on Monday was incensed about a post on Twitter from incoming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Socialist Democrat from New York. On Sunday, the 29-year-old former bartender compared caravan members at the U.S.-Mexico border — many of whom stormed the border and had to be repelled by tear gas — with Jews during the Holocaust.
“Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime. It wasn’t for Jewish families fleeing Germany. It wasn’t for targeted families fleeing Rwanda. It wasn’t for communities fleeing war-torn Syria. And it isn’t for those fleeing violence in Central America,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in her post.
Graham decided to teach the young congresswoman — who apparently doesn’t know what the three branches of government are, despite a degree from Boston University in economics and international relations — a thing or two.
“I recommend she take a tour of the Holocaust Museum in DC. Might help her better understand the differences between the Holocaust and the caravan in Tijuana,” Graham wrote on Twitter.
Ocasio-Cortez fired back, saying: “@LindseyGrahamSC, the point of such a treasured museum is to bring its lessons to present day. This administration has jailed children and violated human rights. Perhaps we should stop pretending that authoritarianism + violence is a historical event instead of a growing force.”
She also said: “What if instead of sending 5k troops to the border, we had sent 5k caseworkers to review + process visa applications? In addition to averting moral crisis, it also would‘ve saved enormous amt of resources. But we don’t talk about the financial recklessness of GOP admins, do we?”
But Graham once again schooled Ocasio-Cortez by listing nine thoughts on the current border crisis, instead of spouting platitudes.
“As someone who has worked for over a decade to fix our nation’s broken immigration system, some thoughts on the caravans and the current situation on our southern border. #1,” he wrote. Then he followed with this:
We will not have the necessary ‘buy-in’ from the American people for a solution dealing with illegal immigrants already in the United States if we cannot convince the public we have the ability to stop future waves of illegal immigration. #2
The current chaos at our southern border must be dealt with properly or we will never find a solution to our broken immigration system. #3
Everyone who supports dealing fairly with illegal immigrants already in the United States should make it clear the lawless behavior occurring at the southern border crossing will not be tolerated. #4
Americans want an immigration policy which we control, not one where illegal immigrants control us. We are a nation of immigrants. We are also a kind and generous people. But Americans will not be played for fools. #5
It’s simple: We as Americans – have the right to decide who gets to come into our country, not immigrants seeking to force their way in. #6
I have worked with many Democrats who have compassion for illegal immigrants already in the United States. In order to solve this problem, now is the time for Democrats to be clear that they too oppose the lawless behavior from illegal immigrants at the border. #7
They can also offer their strong support for additional efforts to secure our border today and in the future. #8
Showing the American people we will take a tough line on future waves of illegal immigration helps build the necessary political support to deal fairly with the problems created in the past. #9
It remains the pathway forward and Americans are watching how we handle this current test. #10
Game, set and match.
