British Ambassador To U.S. Resigns After Trump Ignores Him

On Wednesday, Sir Kim Darroch, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the U.S., resigned after President Trump started pointedly ignoring him because of Darroch’s rude comments about the Trump administration.

Darroch’s resignation came after Boris Johnson, the likely candidate to become Great Britain’s next prime minister, refused to say during a televised debate on Tuesday whether he would retain Darroch in his position after Johnson succeeded to the post, as The Daily Mail reported.

The uproar over Darroch’s behavior began when The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that Darroch had used secret cables and briefing notes in which he had slammed Trump and his administration. The Daily Mail reported that Darroch called disputes in the White House “knife fights,” said Trump could be indebted to “dodgy Russians,” and snapped, “We don’t really believe this Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction-riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.” He wrote that he doubted whether Trump’s White House would “ever look competent.”

Darroch also complained regarding the White House, “This is still the land of America First.” He disliked how the White House has dealt with Iran, writing that their policy was “incoherent, chaotic,” adding, “It’s unlikely that U.S. policy on Iran is going to become more coherent any time soon. This is a divided Administration.”

On Monday, the president said he would ignore Darroch, tweeting, “’I have been very critical about the way the U.K. and Prime Minister Theresa May handled Brexit. What a mess she and her representatives have created. I told her how it should be done, but she decided to go another way. I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well thought of within the U.S. We will no longer deal with him.”

On Tuesday Trump went further, tweeting, “The wacky Ambassador that the U.K. foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was handled. I told @theresa_may how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way-was unable to get it done. A disaster! I don’t know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool. Tell him the USA now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far.”

Long before the current uproar, just after Trump won the presidency, The Sunday Times reported of a memo Darroch wrote in which he stated, “The president-elect is above all an outsider and unknown quantity, whose campaign pronouncements may reveal his instincts, but will surely evolve and, particularly, be open to outside influence if pitched right… We should be well placed to do this.”

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage commented after news of Darroch’s resignation, “The right decision, time put in a non-Remainer who wants a trade deal with America.”
