The Leave campaign won a majority vote in a state-wide referendum on Friday morning, advancing a movement to withdraw the UK for the European Union (EU).
Both the BBC and Sky News reported victory for those supporting Brexit. The British state broadcaster and left-wing network announced their predictions around 11:50 PM ET with 70% of votes counted. Securing 52% of the votes, the Leave campaign’s winning of the state-wide referendum represents the first electorally proposed departure of a nation-state from the EU superstate.

While the referendum results are not binding upon the government, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has committed himself to moving forward with withdrawal from the EU should the Leave campaign win a majority of votes. The process for a member state’s withdrawal is articulated in Treaty on European Union.
Driven by opposition to increasingly centralized political power in Brussels, the Leave campaign calls for reclamation of national sovereignty. With the transference of political power to Brussels, UK citizens have outsourced much of their democratic decision-making capacity to distant foreign bureaucrats. Destructive immigration policies wrought by the free movement of persons across the continent – known as the Schengen Area – has amounted to a de facto redistribution of wealth.
With dozens of differing languages and cultures – excluding new arrivals since the mid-20th century – across the continent, cultural cohesion is transitioning to Balkanization. Furthered by a neo-Marxist political ethos of “multiculturalism” codified into laws and regulations by the EU, the status quo posed an existential threat to British cultural and national continuity.
Opposition to the admission of low-skilled European and non-European persons pursuing taxpayer-funded and government-driven “social welfare programs” has also animated Brexit supporters. The importation of poverty lowers material standards of living.
The EU’s refusal to guard its own borders facilitated the illegal entry of millions of foreigners into Europe; mostly Muslims from Africa and the Middle East. With millions of non-Europeans already lawfully residing within the continent, Brexit supporters want full control over national borders to prevent culturally fatal demographic changes via immigration.
Former London mayor, member of Parliament, and prominent Brexiteer Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that June 23 could be the UK’s “Independence Day.”
