It looks like there’s going to be a major probe into the Clinton Foundation after all.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reports that the FBI and the U.S. Attorneys Offices are conducting joint investigations into the Clinton Foundation for corruption. Preet Bharara, the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney, is leading the investigation, as the Clinton Foundation is based in New York.
The Daily Caller lists two of Bharara’s most notable accomplishments:
Bharara is best known for securing convictions of prominent political figures, including former New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Silver had a seemingly intractable grip on power in the state for decades. He was convicted of accepting $4 million in exchange for helping a cancer researcher and two real estate developers.
He also secured the conviction of New York Republican Majority Leader Dean Skelos, who was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption.
Bharara is known for vigorously pursuing prosecutions.
This is far different from the investigation into Clinton’s email probe, in which there was coordination between the FBI and the Department of Justice. An FBI-U.S. Attorney structure makes it more likely that there will be action taken against the Clinton Foundation since prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office “are generally thought to be more aggressive than the career lawyers within the DOJ.”
The FBI-U.S. Attorney’s Office probe is a welcome development, especially since it was reported on Thursday that the Department of Justice chose not to launch an investigation into the Clinton even though three of their field offices called for it, proving that the DOJ has morphed into an agency that puts politics above the rule of law.
There’s also no question that the publicly available information points to a quid pro quo that occurred between the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clinton’s State Department, including the newly-discovered email thread that showed a Lebanese Clinton Foundation donor who was convicted of money laundering received access to Clinton.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that any action will be taken into the Clinton Foundation–James Comey still runs the FBI after all, and since he went through hoops to protect Clinton once, there’s no reason to think he won’t do it again–but at least the probe will make the Clinton Foundation sweat a little bit.
