Suspicious packages were sent to former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. One package was found near the Chappaqua, NY, property of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and the other was sent to Obama’s office.
Breaking news from NBC and the Associated Press claimed the package was found on the Clintons’ property, but ABC reports the package was found near the property. The New York Times reports an “explosive device” was found in mail sent to the Clintons and former President Barack Obama.
The AP is claiming the suspicious package addressed to the Clinton’s was a bomb.
Law enforcement officials have not given additional details about the package, but the concern is that this incident may be associated with the explosive device found in the mailbox of liberal billionaire George Soros, who also has a home in Westchester County.
The FBI is investigating these incidents and the one involving an explosive device found in Soros’ mailbox. Police now believe the device was hand delivered, rather than mailed.
Update 9:52 am: The Secret Service issued a statement saying the “packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such.” Neither Clinton nor Obama received the packages and were not at risk of receiving them.
Update 10:12 am: White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement condemning “the attempted violent attacks” on Obama and Clinton, calling them “terrorizing acts” and demanding the “cowards” responsible be punished.
Update 10:17 am: CNN’s New York City office has been evacuated. Host Jim Sciutto says the bomb squad has been called for a suspicious package.
Update 10:21 am: CNN reporting a suspicious package was also sent to the White House.
Update 11:39 am: The Secret Service says there was no suspicious package sent to the White House.
Update 11:41 am: NBC reports that the packages feature a return address from a “prominent democratic official.”
Update 11:43 am: CNN now reports the suspicious package sent to its New York City bureau was “addressed to former CIA director John Brennan.”
Update 11:49 am: Police are now investigating a suspicious package sent to the office of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL).
Update 12:00 pm: NBC now reports the return address for the suspicious packages are all from Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), though it is highly unlikely she’s behind the attacks.
Update 10/25 9:45 am: A suspicious package addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden was intercepted in Delaware. Another package addressed to actor Robert De Niro was also intercepted.
