James Bond could be non-binary in the future, according to Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the 007 franchise.

In a new interview, Broccoli dismissed the idea that Daniel Craig’s replacement could be a woman, but admitted that a future Bond could be “non-binary,” considering themselves to be neither male or female.

Broccoli discussed the replacement of Craig on the “Speaking to the Girls On Film” podcast. Craig is stepping down after five performances as James Bond, following his final appearance in “No Time To Die.”

As Daily Mail reported, when host Anna Smith asked if she thought 007 would always be male, she replied: “I do, because I don’t think that we should be making films where women are playing men.”

“I think we should be making more films about women. I think Bond will be a man,” she added.

Smith suggested “Non-binary, perhaps, maybe one day?” to which Broccoli replied: “Who knows? I mean, I think it’s open. We just have to find the right actor.”

Broccoli controls the 007 franchise through her production company. She also said that they “want the actor to be British … and British, as we know, can be many things.”

As Daily Mail noted, one Hollywood producer said, “Bond has to adapt to the times but a non-binary 007 might be hard for fans to accept.”

Back in January 2020, Broccoli and fellow James Bond producer Michael G. Wilson confirmed that 007 can be “any color” — black, white, brown — but he would always be a male.

“He can be of any color, but he is male,” Broccoli said, as reported by Fox News. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

However, back in 2019, former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan said that he would like to see the franchise do a gender-swap in the near future with the title character.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Brosnan said the time has come for James Bond to become Jane Bond.

“I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there. I think it would be exhilarating, it would be exciting,” he said. “I don’t think that’s going to happen with the Broccolis. I don’t think that is going to happen under their watch.”

“James Bond has a certain significance and a deep pride,” he said. “I will be asked about him until my dying days — it just goes with the territory. He’s a beloved character. I was honored to play the role and I rejuvenated a franchise that had been dormant.”

Daniel Craig’s first outing as James Bond, “Casino Royale,” premiered on November 14, 2006, and grossed almost $595 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Bond film until the release of “Skyfall,” which grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide.
