Ben Carson Calls Slaves ‘Immigrants’

As new Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson spoke to his staff for the first time, he made a rather ill-considered remark, which elicited condemnation on Twitter, as he called the slaves who were brought to America “immigrants.”

As The Blaze reports, Carson stated, “That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity. There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”

Some of the reaction looked like this:

Carson has been stumble-mouthed before, viz., “Even if Donald Trump turns out not to be such a great president, which I don’t think is the case, I think he’s going to surround himself with really good people, but even if he didn’t, we’re only looking at four years as opposed to multiple generations and perhaps the loss of the American dream forever.”

Or revealing Trump’s public persona might be fake: “There are two different Donald Trumps. There’s the one you see on the stage and there’s the one who’s very cerebral, sits there and considers things very carefully.”

Carson has referred to slavery before; in October of 2013, he said, “Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. And it is in a way, it is slavery in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government, and it was never about health care. It was about control.”
