Angela Lansbury: Women ‘Must Sometimes Take Blame’ For Sexual Abuse

By  Amanda

In an interview with Radio Times on Tuesday, actress Angela Lansbury weighed in on the recent onslaught of sexual misconduct allegations sweeping Hollywood and Congress, offering a controversial take.

The “Murder, She Wrote” actress believes women must “sometimes take blame” for being victims of sexual abuse at the hands of men. According to the 92-year-old, this is the price women must pay, at least in part, for going “out of their way to make themselves attractive.”

“There are two sides to this coin,” said Lansbury. “We have to own up to the fact that women, since time immemorial, have gone out of their way to make themselves attractive. And unfortunately it has backfired on us — and this is where we are today.”

“We must sometimes take blame, women,” continued the actress. “I really do think that. Although it’s awful to say we can’t make ourselves look as attractive as possible without being knocked down and raped.”

Lansbury went on to clarify that there is “no excuse” for such acts of misconduct against women.

“Should women be prepared for this? No, they shouldn’t have to be!” she exclaimed. “There’s no excuse for that. And I think it will stop now — it will have to. I think a lot of men must be very worried at this point.”

Lansbury’s comments, as one might suspect, drew a lot of reactions on Twitter. Some found the Hollywood legend’s remarks controversial, but not “malicious” and a product of her generation. Others, like feminist actress Patricia Arquette, scolded Lansbury for victim blaming.
