In an interview with NBC News partially aired on Wednesday, Ivanka Trump signaled support for the admission of refugees from the failed Muslim-majority state of Syria.
Speaking with NBC’s/MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson, President Donald Trump’s eldest daughter was asked about the admission of refugees from Syria:
IVANKA TRUMP: I think there is a global humanitarian crisis that’s happening, and we have to come together, and we have to solve it.
HALLIE JACKSON: Does that include opening the borders to Syrian refugees in the U.S.?
IVANKA TRUMP: That has to be part of the discussion, but that’s going to be enough in and of itself.
In March, Trump issued an executive order restricting entry to the homeland by foreign nationals from seven Muslim-majority states. Colloquially referred to as the “travel ban,” the executive order included Syrian nationals – a well as foreigners who had recently traveled to Syria – as part of a cohort of persons prohibited from entering America.
The White House house described the aforementioned executive order as serving the ends of protecting national security via “extreme vetting” of foreigners seeking entry to America. The executive order was subsequently blocked via a temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by a U.S. district judge in Washington; the TRO was later upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The president later promised to combat the rulings:
“We are going to fight this terrible ruling. We are going to take our case as far as it needs to go, including all the way up to the Supreme Court. We are going to win, we are going to keep our citizens safe and regardless, we are going to keep our citizens safe, believe me.”
Across his presidential campaign, Donald Trump regularly opposed status quo policies related to the admission of Muslim refugees on national security grounds, noting the overlap between Muslims and Islamic terrorism.
Ivanka Trump currently operates as a political adviser to her father in her official capacity as Assistant to the President.
