It was reported Monday morning that Dictionary.com’s 2021’s official “Word of the Year” is “allyship.”

The term is an old noun simply meaning “alliance,” but in recent years it has been co-opted by various left-wing causes to describe individuals who may not meet the definition of a supposedly-opposed group — such as the LGBT community or black community — but lend their support to said group anyway.

The Associated Press reported that Dictionary.com editor John Kelly noted some people may be surprised to see the word make it atop the company’s highest honor:

“It might be a surprising choice for some,” he told The Associated Press ahead of Tuesday’s unveiling. “In the past few decades, the term has evolved to take on a more nuanced and specific meaning. It is continuing to evolve and we saw that in many ways.”

The site offers two definitions for allyship: The role of a person who advocates for inclusion of a “marginalized or politicized group” in solidarity but not as a member, and the more traditional relationship of “persons, groups or nations associating and cooperating with one another for a common cause or purpose.”

The word is set apart from “alliance,” which Dictionary.com defines in one sense as a “merging of efforts or interests by persons, families, states or organizations.”

The company said that various private businesses’ willingness to signal their virtues made them keen allies to numerous progressive pursuits this past year:

“This year, we saw a lot of businesses and organizations very prominently, publicly, beginning efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Allyship is tied to that. In the classroom, there is a flashpoint around the term critical race theory. Allyship connects with this as well,” Kelly said.

On Sunday, The Daily Wire reported that bestselling children’s author Matt Walsh skyrocketed to the top of Amazon’s LGBTQ+ category as his newest book “Johnny the Walrus” was declared the top-selling LGBTQ+ book in recent days:

Daily Wire podcast host and beloved children’s author Matt Walsh landed the number one best selling new release “LGBTQ+” book on Amazon this weekend.

“I now have the number one LGBT book in the country. Any further criticism of me or my book is now homophobic,” Walsh wrote to Twitter Sunday morning. “Checkmate.”

Walsh, a fierce cultural critic on the Right, has also taken the liberty in changing his Twitter handle to better, uh, reflect his services to “Bestselling LGBT Author Matt Walsh.”

This means that — if you wish — you can use the word of the year to describe a man who some are calling the author of the year:

“Matt Walsh was awarded for his allyship by becoming a bestselling LGBT author.”

While Dictionary.com noted that numerous businesses expressed their “allyship” by speaking on social issues in 2021, a recent report indicated that nobody actually cared about their opinions on social issues. The report stated voters on the Left and the Right pretty much wished executives would keep their “allyship” to themselves and focus on selling quality products.

Speaking of quality products, reserve your copy of Walsh’s bestselling children’s book here.
