If Black Lives Matter members read The College Fix, they are sure to hold a demonstration at the University of California Merced; The College Fix reports that illegal immigrants make up a larger percentage of the student body than black students.
Data from spring 2016 shows 303 illegal immigrants receive financial aid, teaching jobs, and legal services at the university. That group amounts to almost 5% of the undergraduate student body. The university has 272 black students and 728 white students. 48.5% of the student body is Hispanic; 23.8% is Asian. 13% of its student population is white.
The associate director of the Calvin E. Bright Success Center at the university, Alejandro Delgadillo, told The College Fix that the university “provides services and program that address the unique needs of undocumented students.”
Five illegal immigrant Ph.D. students enrolled during the 2015-16 school year, receiving financial aid and teaching jobs.
Delgadillo told The College Fix, “All have work authorization through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and thus can be legally employed as teaching or graduate research assistants.”
In 2012, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services began accepting applications for the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). By 2014, California had 162,000 deferred action recipients.
According to Heat Street, some of the illegal immigrants at UC Merced have received temporary “lawful” status under DACA, allowing them to stay and work in the country legally.
