Anton Yelchin, an actor best known for his role in Star Trek, died in a strange car accident late Saturday at his home near Los Angeles. He was 27-years-old.

Yelchin was reportedly fatally hit by his own car in his driveway in Studio City. According to police, the actor was standing behind his vehicle when it rolled back and pinned him against a security fence and a brick mailbox. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The actor’s body was discovered by his friends following concern over his absence from a scheduled rehearsal. At roughly 1 AM local time, they went to Yelchin’s house and found his body laying at the driveway. They quickly notified the police who determined that the incident was an accident, rather than a homicide. In other words, it was a freak accident.

Yelchin’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed her client’s death on Sunday and asked the press to respect Yelchin's family’s privacy during their time of mourning.

The fresh-face actor was a rising star in Hollywood. Still under 30, he had played in several prominent films, alongside A-list actors. “Yelchin’s career began with roles in indie films and assorted television shows, before breaking out in films like the crime thriller Alpha Dog, Jodie Foster’s The Beaver and Sundance winner Like Crazy,” explains The Guardian. “His biggest mainstream role to date has been in the rebooted Star Trek films the third of which, Star Trek Beyond comes out in.”

Yelchin had recently finished filming Star Trek. The film is set to be released in July.
