The Baltimore residence of Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was reportedly broken into on Saturday, only hours before President Donald Trump criticized the dilapidated condition of his "very dangerous" congressional district.
Baltimore city police confirmed on Thursday that an individual broke into Cummings' home at around 3:40 a.m., according to CBS Baltimore. Police, however, declined to comment on whether any property was taken during the incident.
The crime reportedly occurred shortly before Trump tweeted a series of attacks on the Maryland congressman, criticizing him for bullying Border Patrol agents over the conditions of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities along the southern border, all while the district he was elected to represent is, according to Trump, a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess."
The president was immediately met with widespread backlash over what many on the left side of the aisle deemed to be racially-motivated attacks. In response, Trump doubled down on the remarks and accused Democrats of always playing the "race card."
"Elijah Cummings spends all of his time trying to hurt innocent people through 'Oversight.' He does NOTHING for his very poor, very dangerous and very badly run district! Take a look … " he tweeted, along with a video showing piles of garbage covering a Baltimore neighborhood. "#BlacksForTrump2020"
Cummings subsequently defended his service to the people in Maryland's 7th Congressional District, as well as his handling of the House Oversight and Reform committee during his tenure as chairman.
"Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors," Cummings said. "It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents."
The president, however, continued his barrage of criticism and went on to tweet a slew of video clips showing the deteriorating conditions of Baltimore.
"So sad that Elijah Cummings has been able to do so little for the people of Baltimore. Statistically, Baltimore ranks last in almost every major category," Trump said in a separate tweet. "Cummings has done nothing but milk Baltimore dry, but the public is getting wise to the bad job that he is doing!"
Accordingly, the city of Baltimore was the runner up for the highest volume of violent crime among the nation's 50 largest cities, according to FBI data published in 2018. It also topped the list for having the worst homicide rate overall. At the time, Republican Gov. Larry Hogan called the news "shocking and disappointing," but further noted that "it doesn't come as a complete surprise."
"Baltimore's numbers are the worst in the United States on Crime and the Economy. Billions of dollars have been pumped in over the years, but to no avail," Trump said. "The money was stolen or wasted. Ask Elijah Cummings where it went. He should investigate himself with his Oversight Committee!"
The Baltimore Police Department would not confirm to The Daily Wire that a break-in occurred at Cummings' residence but did confirm that a break-in occurred on the block where the Maryland lawmaker resides.
