On Sunday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) appeared on CNN’s "State of the Union" with host Jake Tapper.

Before diving into issues like Sanders’ Medicare-for-all plan, Tapper asked the senator and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate about President Trump’s recent remarks regarding Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and the city of Baltimore:

TAPPER: I know you want to talk about issues, but I do also want to talk about what President Trump said about your former colleague in the House Elijah Cummings and his district being "a disgusting rat and rodent infested mess that no human being would want to live in." What's your response?

SANDERS: Jake, it's unbelievable that we have a president of the United States who attacks American cities, who attacks Americans, who attacks somebody who's a friend of mine. Elijah Cummings is one of the most decent and outstanding members of the House of Representatives. He fights every day to improve life in his community.

I do find it interesting that, when we have rural Republican districts where life expectancy is going down, where downtowns are boarded up, where people are struggling – and people are struggling in rural America. They're struggling in urban America. They're struggling in suburban America.

Our job is to bring people together, to improve life for all people, not to have a racist president who attacks people because they are African Americans. That is a disgrace. And that is why we're going to defeat this president.

Also on Sunday, the official "Trump War Room" Twitter account released a video from 2015 in which Sen. Sanders disparages West Baltimore:

But anyone who took the walk that we took around this neighborhood would not think you're in a wealthy nation; you would think that you were in a Third World country. ... But today, what we're talking about is a community in which half of the people don't have jobs. We're talking about a community in which there are hundreds of buildings that are uninhabitable. We’re talking about a community where kids are unable to go to schools that are decent.

The Washington Examiner dug up a tweet from 2016 in which Sanders wrote: "Residents of Baltimore’s poorest boroughs have lifespans shorter than people living under dictatorship in North Korea. That is a disgrace."

In February, USA Today published a list of the "25 Most Dangerous Cities in America," which was complied using data from the FBI’s 2017 Uniform Crime Report. Baltimore ranked as the third most dangerous city in terms of "murder ... non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault."

Only Detroit and St. Louis ranked higher in those combined categories.

Additionally, as The Daily Wire has previously noted, pest control company Orkin ranked Baltimore as the ninth "rattiest city" in the country in 2018. The city ranked number eight in 2017, number six in 2016, and number nine in 2014.

Before castigating the president regarding his tweets, Sen. Sanders would do well to remember the statistics, as well as his own words from just four years ago.
