On his radio program Thursday, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh offered his take on the rapidly escalating quarrel between far-left freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and the leader of the House Democrats, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). The real story, Limbaugh suggested, is the quiet panic going on behind the scenes in the mainstream media as they struggle to maintain their usual "unity" in presenting the pro-Democrat, progressive narrative.
"Holy smokes, folks, Nancy Pelosi’s getting a dose. She is getting some treatment, the kind of treatment we usually get," Limbaugh said in a brief segment addressing the increasingly brutal Democratic civil war between Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez's "Squad" — AOC, Ilhan Omar (MN), Rashida Tlaib (MI) and Ayanna Pressley (MA). "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is accusing Pelosi of racism. She says Pelosi has a bias and is singling out freshman women of color. And, of course, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes that she is a person of color and that Pelosi is singling her out."
Limbaugh's "racism" comment is a reference to Ocasio-Cortez's loaded statement to The Washington Post that captured headlines Wednesday. "When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm's distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood," Ocasio-Cortez told the Post Wednesday. "But the persistent singling out . . . it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful . . . the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color."
Pelosi responded Thursday by standing by her previous rebuke of "The Squad" for suggesting other Democrats were racist. "I said what I’m going to say in the caucus. That’s where this is appropriate," she told reporters. "They took offense because I addressed, at the request of my members, an offensive tweet that came out of one of the member’s offices that referenced our Blue Dogs and our New Dems essentially as segregationists. How they’re interpreting and carrying it to another place is up to them. But I’m not going to be discussing it any further."
"The Drive-By Media doesn’t know what to make of this," said Rush. "The Drive-By Media desperately wants Democrat unity. The Drive-By Media has been running the Democrat Party. Do not doubt me on this, folks. The Drive-By Media, I really believe, has been the energy behind the Democrat Party for a long time. It used to be the Drive-By Media was an adjunct, a branch office, if you will. I think they are headquarters. I don’t think there’s any question about it. And the Drive-By Media is unable to maintain unity."
"You know how they have tried to maintain unity on the Democrat side?" he continued. "Just by focusing on get Trump, get Trump, get Trump, because that’s what they think will unify the rest of the party. That’s why they’re already doing countdowns to the Mueller testimony next Wednesday, while a number of people on Mueller’s side and the DOJ are trying to weasel out of the appearance."
Ocasio-Cortez was asked Thursday if she really meant to suggest that Pelosi is racist. After doubling down on her inflammatory comments to the Post, she denied the obvious implications. "Well I think it’s really just pointing out a pattern, right?" she told CNN Thursday. "We’re not talking just about progressives, it’s singling out four individuals and knowing the media environment we’re operating in knowing the amount of death threats we get, knowing the amount of concentration of attention, I think it’s worth asking why." Pressed if she was saying Pelosi is racist or has "racial animus," the freshman representative said, "No, no, absolutely not, absolutely not."
