It’s time for Ted Cruz to go #NeverTrump.
He essentially did as much this morning, when he blasted Donald Trump in no uncertain terms for Trump’s campaign surrogates pushing an unsubstantiated sex scandal denied by at least two women, including Trump’s own campaign spokesperson. Cruz called the National Enquirer story, broken down here, “complete and utter lies” and a “tabloid smear,” as well as “garbage.” He stated that the smear “has come from Donald Trump and his henchmen…all of which started with Donald Trump.” When asked whether he would support Trump if Trump won the nomination, Cruz answered, “I will say this, I do not make a habit out of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my family…Let me be clear, Donald Trump may be a rat, but I have no desire to copulate with him.”
Cruz should openly state at this point that he won’t back Trump if Trump is the nominee. If the allegations in the National Enquirer are totally false, how could Cruz support a nominee whose campaign surrogates have slandered him as a serial adulterer and insulted his wife? Even Trump's spokeswoman, one of the women slimed by the National Enquirer, tried to imply that even though Cruz never laid a finger on her, maybe the story was still true in other respects:
Of course the National Enquirer story is 100% FALSE!!! I only speak to myself, however.— Katrina Pierson (@KatrinaPierson) March 25, 2016
The argument goes that Cruz should support whomever wins the nomination against the Clinton machine, but the Trump machine is the same type of monster as the Clinton machine. This appears to be a Clinton-style hack job, and it has Trump’s fingerprints all over it. No man of honor should be required to follow the man who tried to destroy his marriage, his political career, and his life.
Cruz has been a good soldier long enough for the Republican Party. It’s not he who has ripped apart that Party – it’s Trump and his sleazy campaign. Ted, it’s time to make clear to the Republican Party establishment that Trumpsters aren’t the only people who can walk away from the Party if they’re unsatisfied.
UPDATE: Here's the response flaming garbage heap of a human being Donald Trump just released to Cruz's accusations that his campaign is involved in pushing the affair story. Shorter version: more flames and garbage.
