After Donald Trump threatened her on Twitter, Heidi Cruz, who prefers remaining in the background while her husband campaigns, finally decided she had heard enough of Trump’s twaddle.
Ms. Cruz held a rare solo press conference, saying bluntly, “You probably know by now that most of the things that Donald Trump have no basis in reality. So we are not worried in the least and focusing on our campaign and we are going to continue to do that.”
Asked whether it was right for spouses to be targeted, Ms. Cruz replied, “We have run our campaign with the principles that Ted and I believe in, and a lot of the things that are done from time to time are not from our campaign and so I want you to focus on what our campaign puts out, which you’ll find is a positive, hopeful, optimistic agenda for this country.”
When she was asked if she had a message for the man who attacke her, Ms. Cruz calmly answered, “I have the same message to this country and to all the candidates that I’ve had from day one, which is, Ted Cruz is a great person to be president of this country.”
Trump issued the threat after the anti-Trump super-PAC Make America Awesome released a nude photo of Trump’s wife Melania that had been featured in British GQ. Trump threatened, “Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!”
Cruz fired back on Twitter:
On Wednesday, Ted Cruz responded on CNN, stating that Trump’s tweet about Heidi Cruz “should be beneath Donald,” but was likely a response to Cruz blowing him out in Utah, Cruz continued, “So last night, Donald threatened my wife. He went directly after my wife. And I gotta tell you that, number one, Heidi, my wife, she’s the daughter of missionaries in Africa, she’s my best friend in the world, and if Donald wants to get in the character fight, he’s better off sticking with me cause Heidi is way out of his league.”
