Responding hours Mitt Romney’s anyone-but-Trump address from earlier on Thursday, Donald Trump mocked the failed 2012 Republican presidential nominee as a “choke artist” displaying hypocrisy in that he sought the New York City billionaire’s endorsement in the same year.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Portland, Maine, Trump shared his recollection of how it all went down.

“”I backed Mitt Romney. I backed him. You can see how loyal he is. He was begging for my endorsement. I could’ve said, ‘Mitt, drop to your knees.’ He would’ve dropped to his knees. He was begging. He was begging me!” said Trump.

Recalling Romney’s botched 2012 presidential bid, Trump described the former GOP presidential nominee as a “disaster” candidate.

“Mitt is a failed candidate. He failed. He failed horribly. He failed badly. That was a race, I have to say folks, that should have been won. That was a race that absolutely should have been won,” said Trump. “He let us down. He should’ve won. He was horrible in the third debate. It was horrible. Something happened.”

Breaking Trump’s concentration and causing the him to laugh during his criticism of Romney, a man in the audience shouted, “He’s a loser!”

Hours earlier, Romney expressed his view of the current state of the presidential election season as an address in Salt Lake City, Utah. Describing Trump as a classless vulgarian, Romney called on Republicans not to support the real estate mogul.
