On Thursday, a political stunt was smacked down at the southern border of the U.S. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and dozens of other left-wing mayors from across the nation were turned away from a detention center located along the southern border in Texas.
According to ABC 7 News, the mayor and his Democratic counterparts "requested access to the detention center, which can hold up to 4,000, so they could inspect the conditions inside," seeking to push for the reunification of illegal immigrant children with their parents.
In the captured video, the mayor is told by a border patrol agent that he and the surrounding media members would not be allowed access.
"Is there a supervisor to talk to here," the mayor asks a border patrol agent.
"We'll allow you guys to stand right here. We'll open the gate, we just don't want to be overrun by media," directs the agent. "Do us a favor and just stay on that side."
Still attempting to squeeze some life out of the squashed political stunt, the mayor used some time in front of the camera to slam the Trump Administration. "We've got an unacceptable situation here," he said, adding, "The problem with the whole equation is there's no honesty from the federal government, no effort to openly tell people what's going on, and we have no reason to trust."
Of course, de Blasio's righteous anger seems to be conditional, or at least politically motivated. The situation at the southern border proceeds President Donald Trump. In fact, outrage over the border first erupted when media figures began posting photos of children detained in overcrowded migrant camps in 2014, when Barack Obama was in office. (Incorrectly, the media initially credited the photos to the Trump administration.)
De Blasio, oddly, did not make his way to the border then.
President Trump has repeatedly blamed Democrats for refusing to come to the table and fix the issues at the border. "People are suffering because of the Democrats," he tweeted. "So we've created and they've created and they've let it happen. A massive child smuggling industry is exactly what it's become."
As The Daily Wire reported, "Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) rejected a GOP legislative proposal on Tuesday that would fix the border separation issue that has consumed the national news cycle over the last week."
