On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that he is replacing embattled National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster with former United States ambassador to the United Nations John R. Bolton.
The New York Times reports that McMaster will retire from the military when he steps down in a couple of weeks and that his departure was “mutual decision and amicable.”
The Associated Press notes that the move to replace McMaster with Bolton comes “ahead of key decisions on Iran and North Korea” and that Bolton injects a very strong “hawkish foreign policy voice” into the Trump administration.
