On Tuesday, the Democratic mayor of Nashville, Mayor Megan Barry, resigned after pleading guilty to felony theft. Roughly one month ago, Barry confessed to having an affair with Sgt. Rob Forrest, the former head of her security detail. Both Barry and Forrest were married; Forrest resigned in January.
As Fox News reported, “District Attorney General Glenn Funk said had the case gone to trial, witnesses would have testified that between March 2016 and February 2018 Barry caused over $10,000 and no less than $60,000 of Metro Nashville city funds to be expended unlawfully. Metro Nashville Police records show Forrest's overtime more than doubled in the budget year after Barry was elected in September 2015. Barry said the affair began in spring 2016, according to an affidavit.”
On Tuesday, Forrest pleaded guilty to the same felony theft charge; he said he would reimburse the city $45,000 he received as salary or overtime when he was not serving as the mayor's security detail.
Two weeks ago, The Tennesean reported that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found nude photos of a woman taken on Forrest’s phone; investigators believed that was evidence of an affair between Forrest and Barry while he was on duty.
An affidavit in support of a search warrant to obtain access to the contents of Barry's cellphone stated that investigators discovered 260 deleted chats between Forrest’s phone and Barry's phone number along with 35 deleted call logs.
On February 22, a spokesman for Barry insisted she would not resign.
