The Democratic National Committee will do whatever it takes to pull themselves out of their fundraising hole, including, apparently, exploiting victims of the recent Parkland mass shooting for donations.
On Friday, the DNC sent an email out to supporters signed by Sara Imam, one of the Parkland students, on a national campaign for gun control, begging Democrats to donate to their party apparatus in memory of the Parkland victims and to ensure mass shootings "never happen again."
Imam begs for help because while the events in Parkland have stoked a "sense of outrage," she needs Democrats' help because she's simply too young to vote. If you don't donate to and support the DNC, she continues in perhaps the email's most embarrassing line, it's entirely possible your child will be next to die.
"We need you, the people of America, to get out and vote this year — for you, your family, your community, but also for people like me," she wrote. "Do it for the survivors who can't vote yet. Do it for those who will never be able to vote because they were murdered in their school, their neighborhood, or their place of worship. Do it so no parent will ever have to receive the news that their child has been shot at school."
As USA Today points out, although the Parkland students have been vocal in support of gun control, using many of the same talking points provided by Everytown for Gun Safety, most Democratic legislators, so far, have been coy about who exactly is underwriting and supporting their national campaign.
This email marks the first time one of the students is admitting to working in concert with Democratic officials to push a policy agenda.
But regardless of admission, the connection was unmistakable from the beginning. In fact, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) told Buzzfeed last week, in a story about the Parkland students' lobbying efforts, that she reached out to victims less than 24 hours after the shooting, putting them in touch with Democratic Party elite and with organizations pushing for stricter gun control.
