Establishment Icon Dole Endorses Trump Over Cruz

Donald Trump supporters insist that Trump is the man best positioned to undermine the establishment status quo. In the latest Des Moines Register poll, 71 percent of voters said they thought Trump would the candidate most likely to “disrupt the way government typically works,” including a majority of supporters of Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).

There’s only one problem: we have no indicators that Trump won’t continue right along with how government typically works. He’s endorsed government use of eminent domain to deprive private Americans of their property for transfer to other private Americans; he’s worked hand in glove in his business with government to enrich himself. And as I’ve been pointing out all day, the establishment now clearly prefers Trump to Cruz.

The latest indicator: Jeb! endorser Bob Dole, 1996 Republican nominee and establishment icon, prefers Trump to Cruz. Here’s what he told The New York Times:

Mr. Dole said that the party would suffer “cataclysmic” and “wholesale losses” if Mr. Cruz was the nominee, and that Donald J. Trump would fare better. “I question his allegiance to the party,” Mr. Dole said of Mr. Cruz. “I don’t know how often you’ve heard him say the word ‘Republican’ — not very often.” Instead, Mr. Cruz uses the word “conservative,” Mr. Dole said, before offering up a different word for Mr. Cruz: “extremist.” “I don’t know how he’s going to deal with Congress,” he said. “Nobody likes him.” But Mr. Dole said he thought Mr. Trump could “probably work with Congress, because he’s, you know, he’s got the right personality and he’s kind of a deal-maker.”

Trump will make deals. He will work with Congress. And Dole echoed Trump’s arguments that Cruz can’t do anything so long as he’s this extreme in his pursuit of Constitutional conservatism: “he doesn’t have any friends in Congress. He called the leader of the Republicans a liar on the Senate floor.”

Well, whoop-de-do.

As I wrote earlier this week, we need nasty. We need uncompromising. Nice and compromising got us here. Dealmakers got us here. The fact that Bob Dole would choose Trump over Cruz should tell you everything you need to know.
