Last week at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), The Daily Signal interviewed Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro regarding his suggestions as to what actions America should take in the wake of the Parkland, Florida shooting. Gun control activists have attacked gun rights supporters for not offering any suggestions on the issue; Shapiro countered by offering a three-pronged approach. He stated:
A few of the ones I’ve proposed are: number one, dramatically heighten school security; I went to a private school where there were armed security guards in uniform and a certain number of guards in uniform per certain number of students. There were hard barriers; you had to show ID to get into the school, or at least they had to know who you were. This seems to me a minimum that we should be doing as a society for the kids. We should be guarding our kids the way we guard our banks.
So that would be number one. Beyond that, I think that David French’s proposal for a gun violence restraining order is not a bad one. The idea that people who are close to you can go and petition a court to have your right to bear arms temporarily removed from you and then, if they want that renewed, then they have to go back to the court and demonstrate additional evidence. But that would at least prevent the sale of guns to the sort of person who just shot up Parkland.
And then, of course, on the media side, I’ve suggested that we’re doing at the Daily Wire: we will not print the names or the photos of the mass shooters because there are studies that suggest that that actually increases the chance of a mass shooting. I’d like to see people in the media put their ratings second and their morality first, put their money where their mouth is on this sort of stuff.
