Leftist Hollywood is abuzz about a new video in which Hollywood blowhard Alec Baldwin whispers conspiratorially, “Donald Trump is in big trouble and he knows it.” The video is Baldwin’s breathless recitation that the investigation into Trump and his supposed collusion with Russia is “gaining steam.”
Baldwin's cohorts in Tinsel Town were delighted:
Let’s look at the annotated text below, shall we?
Donald Trump is in big trouble and he knows it.
Yup, he and the House just passed a huge tax reform bill, he has changed the fundamental dynamic in the Middle East for the better by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the economy is going well; yeah, Alec, he’s in a lot of trouble.
Last week, one of his former top staff, Michael Flynn, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about working with Russia on behalf of the Trump team. He’s the first Trump official to be charged with a crime in the investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election. Remember Flynn? He was one of Trump’s biggest allies on the campaign trail and went on to become his national security adviser, one of the top positions in the White House.
But as Andrew C. McCarthy pointed out at National Review, there was much less to Flynn’s guilty plea than it appeared.
Trump has always been worried about Flynn getting into trouble for his communications with Russia. According to former FBI Director James Comey, Trump told him, “I hope you can see your way to letting this go. To letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
Comey didn’t. Trump also told Comey to stop the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s collusion in the 2016 election. When he wouldn’t, Trump fired Comey.
The video shows Trump saying, “Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey, knowing there was no good time to do it. And in fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story.”
Baldwin warns, “What is Trump so scared of us knowing? And why was Flynn lying to the FBI in the first place? That’s what special counsel Robert Mueller is working to find out. After Trump fired Comey, Mueller was appointed to oversee the investigation and it’s gaining steam.”
Not really. As McCarthy noted earlier this week just to clarify the matter, “For all practical purposes, the collusion probe is over. While the ‘counterintelligence’ cover will continue to be exploited so that no jurisdictional limits are placed on Special Counsel Robert Mueller, this is now an obstruction investigation. That means it is, as it has always been, an impeachment investigation.”
Then, wild speculation from Baldwin:
In addition to Flynn, three other Trump campaign officials have been charged so far. As the investigation gets closer to Trump and his family, he may try again to interfere and obstruct justice. Just like he fired FBI Director James Comey, now he could fire special counsel Robert Mueller or pardon his aides or his family.
Trump has done none of this, but what the heck, a leftist can dream, can’t he?
Baldwin then throws his Hail Mary:
We can’t let this happen and Congress is our last line of defense. That’s where you come in. We need you to call your member of Congress today and ask them to go on record stating if Trump interferes with Mueller’s investigation, they would vote to impeach Trump. There’s no time to waste. Congress needs to hear from you today.
One problem, Alec: Congress ain’t interested in your agenda. You might not want to pin your fantasy-woven hopes on them:
And Alec, it wasn’t just the GOP that voted against it; your two Democrat leaders in the House agreed:
