On Thursday, Ashley Feinberg, a senior reporter for Huffington Post, published a tweet congratulating Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) family for their "upcoming tax-free inheritance."
Feinberg deleted the tweet, but not before it racked up more than 450 retweets and 1,200 "likes."
She then offered what some have called an apology:
Although Feinberg has received a great deal of backlash from the tweet, the support she garnered is more notable:
Some Twitter users even appeared to claim that because the middle class and poor will allegedly be crushed by the GOP’s tax plan, Feinberg’s rather shocking tweet was completely acceptable.
This headline-based assessment of the GOP’s tax plan is, unsurprisingly, not quite true.
The non-partisan Tax Foundation put together the following chart to show how varying income groups would fare if the GOP tax plan were implemented (middle-class benefits abound):
Feinberg’s tweet was incredibly inappropriate, regardless of where she stands on the tax reform debate. Going forward, she might want to implement a ten-minute "rethink" policy prior to publishing any tweets.
