So, ex-NBA star Gilbert Arenas thinks women in the WNBA should play basketball basically naked, and if you think that’s sexist, you’re probably just ugly.
Well, sort of.
Arenas wrote an absurd yet hilarious caption to an Instagram post which featured a video of two blondes—half-naked—playing basketball.
"NOW this is what america was hoping for when they announced the #WNBA back in 1996... not a bunch of chicks running around looking like, cast members from #orangeisthenewblack," wrote the ex-NBA star. "If #skylardiggins came out like this,I dont care if she missed every layup..imma buy season tickets and I dont even know where the f*** #tulsa is hahahah."
Clearly, Arenas did not think the WNBA would actually adhere to his elaborate fantasy, but that didn't stop the world from freaking out and crying sexism. The ex-NBA star seemed to anticipate such an outcry, adding, "if u think this is sexist, 9 times out of 10 u the ugly one and we didnt pay to come see u play anyway."
Arenas was correct in his prediction about the backlash; Mike Bass, the league spokesman, released a statement on behalf of the NBA and WNBA to condemn the post, although Arenas isn't even a member of the league anymore.
"Gilbert Arenas’s comments are repugnant, utterly disrespectful and flat-out wrong," said Bass. "WNBA players are strong, talented and determined individuals who give it their all on the court and serve as inspiring role models to millions around the world. They should be celebrated for their accomplishments, not disparaged with ignorant insults."
Twitter also exploded with outraged players of the WNBA condemning the post.
Is the backlash warranted? Is this sexism in it's purest form or are we a culture who can no longer handle humor that is politically incorrect?
