Neilson Rizzuto, 25, has been “charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular negligence resulting in injury, and one count each of reckless operation and hit-and-run driving” after smashing his truck into a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans Saturday evening, reports CNN. Local Police Chief Michael Harrison said. “The incident occurred near the intersection of Orleans and Carrollton Avenues where the Krewe of Endymion parade was underway.”

According to the New Orleans Police Department, Rizzuto was highly intoxicated at the time of the incident. He crashed his pickup truck into two vehicles before ramming into a crowded parade area.

At least 28 people were injured, five of them critically. Fortunately, all the victims are expected to live. The youngest victim is three years old, while the oldest victims are in their 40s, according to CNN.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:42 p.m. local time, just as the festivities were getting underway.

Police do not believe the incident was linked to terrorism. The fact that this needed to be said tells you everything you need to know about the state of fear many Americans have to live with in the age of radical Islamic terrorism.
