Following in the big footprints of his boss, Vice President Mike Pence is becoming quite the Internet troll.
After President Trump on Tuesday night nominated conservative judge Neil Grouch to the Supreme Court, Pence tweeted: “Here is the Video of 2006 were 45 Democrats Helped Unanimously Confirm #NeilGorsuch (incl. @SenSchumer, and Obama).”
Who know who else voted for the then-nominee to be a judge on the 10th U.S. Court of Appeals? Sen. Joe Biden, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. John Kerry, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Diane Feinstein, Sen. Patrick Leahy. The vote was such a non-issue the Senate did the deed by voice vote, and there are no known senators who opposed the nomination by President George W. Bush.
Now, however, there is a hew and cry from Senate Democrats, who say Gorsuch is too conservative to serve on the nation’s judiciary. Within minutes, Schumer issued a statement expressing "serious doubts" about whether Gorsuch can "vigorously defend the Constitution from abuses of the Executive branch and protect the constitutionally enshrined rights of all Americans."
"Given his record, I have very serious doubts about Judge Gorsuch's ability to meet this standard," Schumer said. "Judge Gorsuch has repeatedly sided with corporations over working people, demonstrated a hostility toward women's rights, and most troubling, hewed to an ideological approach to jurisprudence that makes me skeptical that he can be a strong, independent Justice on the Court.”
Schumer also said "The burden is on Judge Neil Gorsuch to prove himself to be within the legal mainstream” — a quality the New York senator had not demanded from President Barack Obama’s highly liberal nominees to the Supreme Court.
For his part, the 80-year-old Leahy, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said: ”Judge Gorsuch has shown a willingness to limit women’s access to health care that suggests the President is making good on that promise. ... I intend to ask Judge Gorsuch about these and other important issues in the coming months.”
It will be wonderful to watch the senators who backed Gorsuch in 2006 explain why they suddenly find him unfit for the high bench.
