It's Friday and America is about to be great again, so it's the perfect time for something a little lighter.
In the best moment yet of the mostly insincere, always hyper-partisan, grandstanding-heavy confirmation hearings, the eminently likeable former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former SNL comedian Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) managed to get themselves and the entire room genuinely laughing, which is no small feet.
Gov. Perry is Trump's nominee for Secretary of Energy. Despite the fake news hit-piece published by the New York Times falsely claiming Perry didn't know what the Department of Energy actually did, during his 14 years as governor of Texas, Perry dealt with the DoE a great deal and would come in with far more experience in managing the complex department than his predecessor.
When it was time for Sen. Franken, who spent over a decade as a comedian and writer with SNL, to ask Perry some questions, things went off the rails in a welcome way.
"Thank you so much for coming into my office," said Franken to Perry. "Did you enjoy meeting me?"
Franken's little joke inspired a few laughs, but it was Perry's next comment that started to really shake things up.
"I hope you are as much fun on that dais as you were on your couch," said Perry.
"Well..." began Franken, who then grimaced and shook his head as Perry's phrasing sunk in.
This really set the room off, including Perry, who said laughingly, "May I rephrase that, sir?"
"Please!" repeated Franken, adding, "Oh my lord."
Perry at this point was laughing so hard he actually had to turn away from the mic. When Perry finally gathered himself enough to speak, he remarked, "Well, I think we’ve found our Saturday Night Live soundbite."
The line hit Franken just right and he joined the room in a genuine laughter. Watch:
