Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald tore into Christopher Wray on Wednesday after the FBI Director failed to offer a definition for the word &#8220;disinformation.&#8221;
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) posed the question during a hearing in which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-carries-wrays-water-suggests-republicans-imagined-fbi-targeting-school-board-parents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wray testified</a> before the House Judiciary Committee, asking for a firm definition — and Wray appeared to balk.

&#8220;The evidence shows that you, your agency, the people that directly report to you, suppressed conservative-leaning free speech about topics like the laptop, the lab-leak theory of COVID-19&#8217;s origin, the effectiveness of masks and COVID-19 lockdowns and vaccines, speech about election integrity in the 2020 presidential election, security of voting by mail, even parody about the president himself, negative posts about the economy,&#8221; Johnson said.
&#8220;The FBI made the social media platforms pull that information off the internet if it came from conservative sources,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;They did this under the guise that it was &#8216;disinformation.&#8217; Can you define what disinformation is?&#8221;
Wray evaded the question, saying, &#8220;What I can tell you is that our focus is not on disinformation, broadly speaking &#8230;&#8221;
Johnson pushed back, but Wray insisted that the only &#8220;disinformation&#8221; being addressed came from &#8220;malign foreign actors&#8221; — and still failed to provide a definition of the word.

Greenwald went on to explain that the nebulous nature of the word – and its apparent lack of a solid definition — was a feature rather than a bug.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a whole array of terms that have no real, fixed meaning except for however those in power decide subjectively to apply them, on an ad hoc basis. &#8216;Disinformation&#8217; — &#8216;Hate speech&#8217; — &#8216;Terrorism.&#8217; Their ambiguity is intentional: it&#8217;s what allows them to be abused,&#8221; he explained.

Greenwald, a constitutional lawyer and bestselling author, told Shapiro during their hour-plus long sit-down that he firmly believes Snowden intended to act as a patriot and was not in any way working with an adversarial government, like Russia.
&#8220;[Snowden&#8217;s] father was in the Coast Guard, he was kind of a lower-middle class family, he didn&#8217;t really have a lot of educational opportunities, and after 9/11, he wanted to go and fight for his country, including in Iraq,&#8221; Greenwald said of Snowden. &#8220;He wanted to be enlisted in the U.S. Army — broke his legs in basic training, and instead ended up at the CIA. He was a true believer in what he was being told about what the security state does, that it protects the greatest democracy in the world, the United States, and that it does so with good intentions, and he wanted to be a part of that.&#8221;
After he saw that the NSA was &#8220;turning its powers inward on the American people,&#8221; he knew he had to &#8220;blow the whistle,&#8221; Greenwald continued. &#8220;He decided not to dump it all onto the Internet like he could have done if you wanted to harm the United States; he didn&#8217;t want to sell it to foreign powers, like he could have done and got very rich. He, in fact, came to journalists and told us, only release the information that you believe the public needs to know to understand these issues, and keep everything a secret that might endanger people, or in which you&#8217;re in doubt. And to this day, we&#8217;ve only released a small portion of that archive in accordance with his direction, because he really was acting patriotically.&#8221;
&#8220;You may disagree with the methods and all of that, but there&#8217;s no question, for me at least, that his motive was pure, which was that he was offended that the Internet — which is supposed to be this technological innovation designed to empower the citizenry, free us from centralized state and corporate control — was instead degraded into the opposite, the most powerful force for surveillance and coercion ever invented in human history.&#8221;
Greenwald also said Snowden is now in Russia because the Obama administration stopped his attempted route to Latin America, where he was going to get asylum, effectively trapping him in Russia. 
&#8220;To get there, he had to transit from Hong Kong, where he was meeting with us, through Russia and then Havana and onto Latin America,&#8221; Greenwald said. &#8220;Ben Rhodes, in his book, a senior national security official for the Obama administration, boasted of the fact that they knew Snowden was trying to get out of Russia and trying to get to Latin America. They called the Cubans, at which point they were negotiating the lifting of the embargo with Cuba, and they said, &#8216;If you have any hope of getting this embargo lifted, you better not let Edward Snowden pass safely through Havana. We want him trapped in Russia.&#8217; The Cubans withdrew their offer of safe passage, and they trapped him in Russia.&#8221;
&#8220;He didn&#8217;t choose to be in Russia,&#8221; Greenwald said of Snowden. &#8220;He never wanted to be in Russia as an American. He has an American wife, he has two kids; he wants to come back home. They trapped him in Russia and then they turned around and said, &#8216;Oh, look, he&#8217;s in Russia. That&#8217;s proof that he&#8217;s somehow working for a foreign power.'&#8221;
Greenwald also discussed how the political establishment and U.S. institutions, such as the FBI and CIA, are uniquely threatened by Trump due to the former president&#8217;s challenges to the status quo in Washington.
&#8220;I think what happened with Trump is, [&#8230;] he began questioning things that no presidential candidate that&#8217;s viable would ever have questioned previously, such as, for example, the ongoing viability of NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization),&#8221; he said.
&#8220;Whether NATO is viable, we can debate that, but you can&#8217;t debate that. That was declared off-limits,&#8221; Greenwald continued. &#8220;And when Trump started doing those things, or questioning the CIA attempt to remove Bashar al-Assad in Syria, and the entire premise of the U.S. posture about this war, he became a real threat to the permanent power centers in Washington. When he started kind of saying everything there is dirty: &#8216;It&#8217;s a swamp. I could get any politician on the phone I wanted by writing them a check and they&#8217;ll do my bidding.&#8217; This started to really threaten, I think, the stability not of one party or the other, but just of the entire status quo order in Washington.&#8221;
&#8220;They, for that reason, viewed him as a very unique threat and united to try and sabotage first his campaign and then his presidency,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Even if you hate Donald Trump, even if you agree that he&#8217;s a danger, this unique danger, which I don&#8217;t, [what&#8217;s] at least as dangerous, if not more so, is the fact that these institutions are now very willing to interfere in our domestic politics way beyond what they were ever supposed to do. And I regard that, and not any particular politician like Donald Trump, as the greatest threat to our democracy.&#8221;
Greenwald and Shapiro also talked about the state of journalism and social media censorship, and debated, from opposing viewpoints, U.S. foreign policy and American interventionism.

Independent journalist <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/topic/glenn-greenwald/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glenn Greenwald</a> said Sunday that there was a very simple reason that members of his chosen profession seemed unwilling to question the narrative surrounding the alleged attack on Paul Pelosi — namely the possibility that asking questions could put their careers at risk.
Greenwald laid out his theory in a Twitter thread, saying that it didn&#8217;t even matter whether or not the prevailing narrative — that the person who was arrested at House Speaker <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/topic/nancy-pelosi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nancy Pelosi&#8217;s</a> (D-CA) was a <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/part-of-the-insurrection-toxicity-msnbc-anchor-tries-to-tie-paul-pelosi-attack-to-january-6th/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">far-right conspiracy theorist</a> and election denier — was true. The point, he said, was that it couldn&#8217;t be questioned.
&#8220;It&#8217;s very possible that the instantly formed media narrative — Paul Pelosi&#8217;s attacker was a MAGA fanatic who broke in to murder Nancy — will be proven true. But right now there are so many glaring doubts and holes in that story that it just takes common sense to question this,&#8221; Greenwald began.

Few journalists have career security,&#8221; Greenwald continued. &#8220;Imagine you&#8217;re a young journalist at a big media corporation. You know if you ask these questions, Twitter will explode and it can ruin your career.&#8221;
He then shared a tweet from Steve Krakauer that included just a few of the questions he thought media ought to be asking.

Greenwald said that he believed many journalists saw the &#8220;glaring questions and evidentiary holes&#8221; in the story that had been pushed so far regarding Pelosi, but especially in the last days before the midterm election, the narrative was even more important than usual. &#8220;Why stick their heads up, provoke a liberal Twitter mob, and be branded?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;That&#8217;s the climate.&#8221;

Police have since clarified that there was not a third person in the home, an early claim that seems to be rooted in the police report stating that police saw Pelosi and DePape fighting over a hammer after the door was answered by a &#8220;unknown person.&#8221;

He even went so far as to leave the outlet he co-founded —The Intercept — after being asked to <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/it-flipped-overnight-glenn-greenwald-points-to-the-one-moment-that-changed-the-pandemic-and-destroyed-trust-in-media/">whitewash an article</a> addressing the reversal of COVID messaging during the George Floyd protests of 2020.
&#8220;In June, I was drafting an article on this flagrantly politicized reversal of COVID messaging. When @theintercept editors learned this, they commissioned an article — for the same day — to argue racism, not COVID, was the greatest health crisis, so everyone *should* go protest,&#8221; he explained.
After leaving The Intercept, Greenwald said the outlet had also censored his articles about Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden, and the president’s past dealings with China and Ukraine.

Independent journalist <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/glenn-greenwald" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glenn Greenwald</a> laid out a damning thread outlining what he called the &#8220;regime of censorship&#8221; — which he said was largely supported by Democrats in Washington, &#8220;disinformation experts,&#8221; and several others.
Greenwald initially raised the alarm and left <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/thats-our-reality-glenn-greenwald-blows-up-medias-collusion-to-shield-hunter-biden/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Intercept</a> — the outlet he cofounded — when he was asked to sanitize an article he was writing about then-candidate Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and their past dealings with both China and Ukraine. And in the months since, he has been vocal about coordinated attempts within corporate media to shield Biden and other Democrats from criticism.
&#8220;The regime of censorship being imposed on the internet – by a consortium of DC Dems, billionaire-funded &#8216;disinformation experts,&#8217; the US Security State, and liberal employees of media corporations – is dangerously intensifying in ways I believe are not adequately understood,&#8221; Greenwald said on Tuesday to kick off his thread.

According to Greenwald, what each of those crises had in common was that they &#8220;all fostered new methods of repression.&#8221;
Greenwald then pivoted to address the failed attempts to get popular podcaster Joe Rogan <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/stop-using-african-americans-to-do-your-dirty-work-tyrus-lets-woke-critics-have-it-over-joe-rogan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">canceled</a> — for his comments about COVID and potential therapeutics first, and when that didn&#8217;t work, for previous statements that were later deemed offensive.

Greenwald went on to say that the move to promote censorship had created a whole new industry — and he called out those he referred to as the worst offenders: &#8220;The worst, most vile arm of this regime are the censorship-mad liberal employees of big media corporations.&#8221;
Among those he named were CNN&#8217;s Ben Collins and Brandy Zadrozny and Libs of TikTok nemesis Taylor Lorenz.
&#8220;It is astonishing to watch Dems and their allies in media corporations posture as opponents of &#8216;fascism&#8217; &#8211; while their main goal is to *unite state and corporate power* to censor their critics and degrade the internet into an increasingly repressive weapon of information control,&#8221; he <a href="https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1567292204833439745" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>.

&#8220;This is the frog-in-boiling-water problem: the increase in censorship is gradual but continuous, preventing recognition of how severe it&#8217;s become,&#8221; Greenwald observed, listing several <a href="https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1567293323336978432" target="_blank" rel="noopener">examples</a> of censorship like the European Union banning Russian news updates outright — and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau freezing the bank accounts of truckers who dared to oppose his vaccine mandates.
&#8220;All of this stems from the classic mentality of all would-be tyrants: our enemies are so dangerous, their views so threatening, that everything we do – lying, repression, censorship – is noble,&#8221; Greenwald said, referencing author <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/author-admits-hed-ignore-hunter-biden-having-corpses-of-children-in-his-basement-to-keep-trump-from-winning/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sam Harris&#8217;</a> recent interview claiming that any extreme could be rationalized if it helped to keep former President Donald Trump out of power. &#8220;That&#8217;s what made the Sam Harris confession so vital: that&#8217;s how liberal elites think.&#8221;
After several more tweets decrying the betrayal of &#8220;journalists&#8221; who would position themselves as gatekeepers rather than truth-tellers, Greenwald concluded: &#8220;Heap scorn on the corporate outlets and their deceitful, pro-censorship employees abusing the &#8216;journalist&#8217; label. Read them with full skepticism, or just ignore them. Support outlets and platforms that want to protect free inquiry and the right of dissent, not rob you of it.&#8221;

Part of a dying breed of liberals who predate the requirement to sync up with “thought leaders” 25 years and untold IQ points their junior – fellow Substack exile <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/glenn-greenwald">Glenn Greenwald</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bill-maher">Bill Maher</a> come to mind – Taibbi cut his teeth in the Hunter S. Thompson Gonzo Journalism Chair at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/rolling-stone">Rolling Stone</a>, where he covered politics in the early 2000s. Neither the Left nor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/rolling-stone">Rolling Stone</a> are what they used to be, but <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/journalist-matt-taibbi-scorches-anti-racism-author-robin-diangelos-new-book-unreadable-and-morally-disgusting">Taibbi</a> hasn’t changed much.
Wryly noting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/subscribe-v2">the film</a>, in which Matt Walsh takes on the radical transgender ideology movement by asking gibberish-spewing activists the film’s eponymous question, is “simultaneously the most talked-about and most ignored documentary in the world,” <a href="https://taibbi.substack.com/p/what-is-a-woman-a-movie-that-should?s=r">Taibbi dives in</a> like a man who can no longer be canceled.
&#8220;What is a Woman?&#8221; A Movie That Should Be Reviewed, For One Thing,&#8221; reads the headline on <a href="https://taibbi.substack.com/p/what-is-a-woman-a-movie-that-should?s=r">Taibbi&#8217;s Substack</a>. &#8220;Matt Walsh pranks the pants off America&#8217;s silliest intellectuals, and the sad thing is, it wasn&#8217;t hard at all.&#8221;

Taibbi doesn’t say where he stands on Walsh’s central question and even confesses to recently hesitating to post his own interview with a feminist critic of the ideology out of fear of “blowback.” He worries at one point about someone being legitimately transphobic and says he &#8220;violently&#8221; disagrees with Walsh on many topics. Yet Taibbi sympathizes with flyover folks who recoil as hulking biological male and reigning NCAA swimming champ Lia Thomas “massacres” a pool full of relatively tiny women. Castigating into silence people with questions is no way to win an argument, in Taibbi’s view.
But that is precisely the way the new Left enforces its groupthink compliance, and it is on display in Taibbi’s career arc as clearly as it is in &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/subscribe-v2">What is a Woman?</a>&#8221; Taibbi credits Walsh for gamely and bravely engaging on what has become the latest third rail of neoliberalism. And he faults many of the film’s pro-trans interview subjects, who “mock themselves” by dismissing the most basic question of all with scornful gobbledygook.
“Most are used to having their bullshit rubber-stamped and don’t realize they’re playing themselves,” writes Taibbi, who cites a college professor triggered by Walsh’s &#8220;transphobic&#8221; use of the word “truth.” “Walsh is a ham and a satirist, a creature we never used to see on the political right decades ago. The verbose absurdity of modern leftist thought, coupled with the astonishing absence of a sense of humor in the landscape from whence the most extreme ideas come, has willed conservative comedy into being.”
One interview subject who Taibbi aptly describes as “well-meaning” and a “good sport,” does try to engage on the issue. Gert Comfrey, a Tennessee marital and family therapist, a biological female who claims to be a man, delivers an incomprehensible ramble about “modalities” and “certain imperatives” before cutting to the chase.
“We know now that… some women have penises, right?” Comfrey says. “Some men have vaginas.”
If humankind’s collective understanding of basic biology has done a 180-degree turn in the last five minutes, people have a right to scratch their heads, Taibbi posits.
“The message of “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/subscribe-v2">What is a Woman?</a>” is not only are there no simple answers to the questions and reservations felt by millions of ordinary people about ‘gender affirmation’ (including huge numbers of Democrats, as polls <a href="https://gen.medium.com/too-many-democrats-in-florida-support-the-dont-say-gay-bill-520a350cf62">in places like Florida</a> show), but the movie shows academic after academic and activist after activist seething at the mere implication that they should have to explain themselves,” Taibbi writes. “Their attitude is positively medieval: ‘We keep the Bible in Latin for a reason!”
Noting that the liberal media has squelched as “bigotry” any earnest questions about “what by any estimation is an incredibly difficult subject,” Taibbi acknowledges that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com">The Daily Wire</a> is one of the few organizations able to make a documentary like “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/subscribe-v2">What is a Woman?</a>”
Taibbi canvased a handful of fellow liberals “who’ve gotten in the soup over this issue.” They agreed that the film was skillfully executed, and one praised Walsh for taking himself “less seriously than the people he interviewed.” But some feminists bristled at the final scene, in which Walsh performs the purportedly deeply sexist task of opening a jar for his wife.
“But overall, I’d say these figures rated the movie a net plus,” Taibbi said of his focus group.

The Left’s hostile unwillingness to explain its ever-changing social and cultural doctrines is about to have political consequences, Taibbi warns. Democrats are poised to get blown out in the midterm elections, and at least part of the reason is their impatience with common people who keep missing memos about what is permissible to believe.
“There is a perception that these relatively new controversies have been declared undebatable, by a priesthood of experts who feel above talking to the unwashed,” Taibbi writes.
“Ignoring popular discontent or confusion on principle isn’t a strategy that can ever work, for any political movement,” he adds. “Walsh’s movie exposes this, and give him credit — he got the people inclined to hate him the most to make his arguments for him.”
If today’s hard leftists ever wonder what happened to their movement’s intellectual firepower, it may dawn on them that they purged people like Matt Taibbi for the crime of engaging the ideas &#8211; and films &#8211; of people with whom they “violently” disagree.

Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald laid into corporate media in a Twitter thread on Saturday morning, detailing how government officials and media outlets had effectively colluded to protect President Joe Biden&#8217;s embattled son Hunter — particularly during the 2020 presidential election.
Greenwald ultimately <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/it-flipped-overnight-glenn-greenwald-points-to-the-one-moment-that-changed-the-pandemic-and-destroyed-trust-in-media/">left The Intercept</a>, the outlet he cofounded, when he was asked to sanitize an article he was writing about then-candidate Joe Biden, his son Hunter, and their past dealings with both China and Ukraine — and he argued Saturday that multiple media outlets had been drawn into the coordinated effort to protect the Bidens.
His comments come in the wake of a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/16/us/politics/hunter-biden-tax-bill-investigation.html">report</a> from The New York Times — which, in addition to confirming that Hunter Biden <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/i-think-were-done-here-jen-psaki-clearly-loses-patience-with-hunter-biden-questions/">remains under a federal investigation</a>, let slip that the emails found on the laptop he reportedly abandoned at a Delaware repair shop were, in fact, authentic.

But in the days that followed, the woke mob continued to come for Rogan, and critics combed through his archives until they found other &#8220;problematic&#8221; comments including a number of instances in which he used the &#8220;n-word.&#8221;
Rogan apologized Saturday in an Instagram post, saying that his language — particularly around race — was the &#8220;most regretful and shameful thing&#8221; he had ever had to address.

Greenwald went on to <a href="https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/status/1488514297361743873">mention</a> MSNBC host Joy Reid as an example, referencing her ludicrous <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/busted-internet-archive-responds-joy-reids-claim-ryan-saavedra/">claim</a> that &#8220;hackers&#8221; had changed her old blog posts to make them homophobic — and the fact that she&#8217;d been promoted by NBC a short time later. &#8220;Corporate media has no standards,&#8221; he said.
Greenwald then posited that the reason media outlets have been so intent on focusing attention on Rogan&#8217;s potential to <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/this-platform-needs-to-police-the-view-suggests-limits-on-free-speech-as-long-as-it-limits-joe-rogan/">spread &#8220;misinformation&#8221;</a> was that they wanted people to forget how often — and how effectively — they do it.
&#8220;The reason corporate journalists are so fixated on uniting to accuse Rogan of spreading disinformation is so you forget how often and how destructively they do it — same way neocons and CIA goons united to insist Trump was a unique evil so you forgot about who they are,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;A big part of the hatred corporate media employees harbor for Rogan is petty professional jealousy: same reason they hate Assange.
