Stephan Cannon, 26, was sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison for the murder of retired St. Louis police captain <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/topic/david-dorn/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">David Dorn</a> — and an additional 30 years for other crimes.
A Missouri jury <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/jury-delivers-justice-for-david-dorn-beloved-ex-st-louis-cop-killed-by-2020-riot-thug/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">convicted Cannon</a> of <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/george-floyd-rioter-admits-he-set-pawnshop-ablaze-but-denies-killing-man-inside/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first-degree murder</a> — which took place during the riots that occurred in downtown St. Louis on June 2, 2020 — in July of 2022. He was also convicted on several other counts: first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, stealing $750 or more, unlawful possession of a firearm and three counts of armed criminal action, all of which are felonies under Missouri law.
On Wednesday, as reported by local NBC affiliate KSDK, Judge Theresa Counts Burke handed down a <a href="https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/crime/stephan-cannon-sentence-life-prison-david-dorn-retired-st-louis-police-captain-death/63-12e8bf61-496a-464a-bd57-372c5e4747fd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mandatory life sentence</a> without the possibility of parole for the murder — and added on the maximum sentences for the other convictions as well.

&#8220;This is the maximum sentence the law allows,&#8221; Counts Burke said during the sentencing, adding, &#8220;Your life does continue on and this is a choice you have to make, how do you continue on?&#8221;
Dorn&#8217;s son, Brian Powell, gave a statement during the hearing as well, pleading with Cannon to use the experience to turn his life around and make himself an example for other young men while in prison.
&#8220;I hope your eyes are woke. You still have time to get everything together and make amends with your maker,&#8221; he said, going on to note that his father&#8217;s life of service had inspired him and his brother to serve the community as well.
&#8220;We saw kids just like Stephan Cannon, and we tried our best to help as many kids as we can. We used to beat ourselves up and my mom, she said, &#8216;You can&#8217;t save everyone,'&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And this is one of the young men that fell through the cracks. But he has time to try to get his life back on track. He may not ever see the light of day, but if he&#8217;s inside, he can definitely share with the other young men that may go to prison. Just share something that can turn them on the straight and narrow.&#8221;
&#8220;So I&#8217;m glad justice was served today. It&#8217;s just sad. No one wins in this situation. Everybody is hurt. We&#8217;re hurt. His family&#8217;s hurt. No one wins. But we are just glad that justice prevailed today,&#8221; he concluded.
Dorn&#8217;s widow, Ann Dorn, was a bit less charitable to her husband&#8217;s killer. &#8220;He became a victim of the very thing he fought against,&#8221; she said, adding that Cannon would have to seek God&#8217;s forgiveness because she could not give him hers.
&#8220;Today I chose to be a survivor. I cannot live my life as a victim,&#8221; she added, noting that the incident had left her with PTSD and forced her into early retirement from the police force.
To Cannon, she said: &#8220;I&#8217;ll never give you a second thought.&#8221;
She then asked the judge to deliver the maximum sentence — which she did.
Dorn was killed when he went to a friend&#8217;s pawn shop in an effort to protect it from rioters swarming the streets of the city after George Floyd was killed while in Minneapolis police custody. As he approached the store, Cannon fired ten shots at Dorn.
Cannon&#8217;s legal team has promised to appeal his conviction, and even as he apologized to Dorn&#8217;s family for their loss, he insisted that he had not been the one to kill the retired officer.

The widow of the retired St. Louis police captain who was murdered during a riot in June 2020 following the death of George Floyd ripped Vice President Kamala Harris and leftist billionaire George Soros for their support of soft-on-crime policies.
Ann Dorn, a retired police sergeant with 20 years’ service, spoke of her husband David, who was murdered at the age of 77 when he investigated alarms going off at a friend&#8217;s pawn shop in St. Louis, saying his death resulted as local police “were ordered not to do their jobs.”
“David became a cop because when he was a little boy he wanted to be a superhero,” Ann Dorn wrote in an <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/husband-dorn-murdered-riots-killer-help-dividing-america">opinion piece</a> for Fox News. “And he was a superhero. But if real life superheroes exist, so do supervillains.”
“Those supervillains are people like the man who killed my husband. They are people like, billionaire George Soros, who use their power and influence to promote extremist politics and fan the flames of division. They are people like Vice President Kamala Harris, who raised money for the rioters’ bail funds, and the CEOs of prominent companies who blindly gave their support and money to this,&#8221; she wrote.
On June 2, 2020, David Dorn, who had served 38 years in St. Louis’ Metropolitan Police Department and then as police chief in Moline Acres, approached Lee&#8217;s Pawn and Jewelry after an alarm was triggered. Stephan Cannon, 24, shot Dorn ten times; he was later convicted of first-degree murder.

“David didn’t agree with or support Black Lives Matter,” Ann Dorn wrote of her husband, who was black. “He never understood Black Lives Matter, because it never actually did anything to help Black lives. The next year, in the summer 2021, the fund <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/09/08/bail-fund-backed-by-kamala-harris-freed-man-charged-with-murder/">bailed out</a> George Howard, 48, who was being held on charges of domestic abuse. Weeks after he was released, he was charged the murder of a driver in a road-rage incident.
“The Republican Party did reach out to me, several of them, just to offer their condolences,” Ann Dorn has said before in an interview. “Donald Trump did call; Donald Trump has a history of calling law enforcement and first responders’ families when somebody is lost in the line of duty; to offer his condolences, offer his help; that was nothing new. Dave was actually known in the community and he worked with a lot of Democrats, and I didn’t get one phone call or any condolence from any of them.”

A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/missouri">Missouri</a> jury quickly delivered justice Wednesday to the family of a beloved former <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/st-louis">St. Louis</a> police captain who was shot dead by a thug while trying to protect a friend’s business during riots and looting in June of 2020.
Stephan Cannon, 26, was found guilty in the murder of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/david-dorn">David Dorn</a>, a 77-year-old black man whose killing became a key inflection point in the riots over police brutality that followed the death of George Floyd.
&#8220;Justice has been served,&#8221; Dorn’s family told reporters outside the courthouse in videos posted online.
The jury took just over three hours to come back with guilty verdicts against Cannon for first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, stealing $750 or more, unlawful possession of a firearm and three counts of armed criminal action.
&#8220;I’m very glad that justice was served for Capt. Dorn,&#8221; said Paul Mauro, an attorney and former NYPD inspector who has been closely following the case. &#8220;But make no mistake – the conditions that allowed his killing should never have occurred.”

Dorn was responding to a burglar alarm on June 2, 2020 at Lee’s Pawn and Jewelry, a store owned by his friend, when he confronted a pack of looters. Cannon, who was among them, shot Dorn dead on the sidewalk outside the shop in an incident the aftermath of which was filmed and briefly shared to Facebook Live. Prosecutors played it in court.
Prosecutors proved Cannon was the gunman, showing only he was standing on the nearby corner from which the shots were fired. Police later recovered a handgun, televisions from the pawnshop and pieces of Cannon’s dreadlocks from an apartment where he was staying.
Riots rocked St. Louis and a number of other major U.S. cities in 2020 following the death of Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. Dorn, 77, was killed in the early morning hours of June 2, 2020, after a burglar alarm went off at his friend’s pawn shop, Lee’s Pawn Shop and Jewelry. On the night of Dorn&#8217;s death, four St. Louis officers were shot and dozens of other businesses were damaged or burglarized, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/83b1ecab54f039bbd30346a218a4c994">reported</a>.
“Dave Dorn was a great man. He was fair; the sharpest, cleanest guy,” retired St. Louis police officer David Ellison <a href="https://fox2now.com/news/missouri/beloved-former-st-louis-police-captain-killed-by-looters/">said</a> of Dorn the day of the shooting.
Stephan Cannon, 24, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/st-louis-police-arrest-man-for-allegedly-murdering-retired-black-police-captain-david-dorn">arrested in June 2020</a> and charged with first-degree murder over Dorn’s death. Cannon is also charged with armed robbery, burglary, stealing, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Back in January, Cannon&#8217;s trial date was scheduled for July 18 but the development received little notice. The updated trial schedule appeared on the court&#8217;s docket on Friday.

David Dorn, the retired St. Louis police captain who was killed last June while defending a business from looters, has been chosen to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor Citizen Honor Award, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society announced on Thursday.
The citizen award, only given to a handful of people each year, was given to Dorn for his performance of an extraordinary act of courage and sacrifice on the night he was killed. Decisions on who receives the award are made by a panel of Medal of Honor recipients each year.
Dorn, one of the two recipients of the “Single Act of Heroism” award, was responding to a pawn shop robbery when he was fatally shot. His own grandson unknowingly watched a live-stream of it, unaware that the video was showing his grandfather dying.
“We would like David’s legacy to be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, colleague, and most importantly, a child of God,” said Ann Dorn, his long-time wife, in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc-sL5vVo1Y">press conference</a> last June, reported KSDK New.
Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), who represents Dorn’s home town of St. Louis in the U.S. Senate, commended the late police captain for his dedication to helping others in the community.
&#8220;David Dorn was dedicated to helping others and protecting his community, even after he retired from law enforcement and through his last moments with us. His character represents the absolute best of Missouri and this country,” said Hawley in a statement Thursday morning. “This award may be rare, but the exceptional courage and devotion of Officer Dorn is shared by his brothers and sisters in blue who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Our local law enforcement officers deserve our sincerest gratitude for protecting our communities every single day.&#8221;
The case drew some national attention last summer but was largely overshadowed by other stories, including coverage of the unrest over the death of George Floyd, which triggered national protests and riots, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
During the Republican National Convention in August, Ann Dorne spoke about the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/i-relive-that-horror-watch-david-dorns-widow-emotionally-recount-her-husbands-death-plead-for-an-end-to-nightmare-of-riots-and-looting">loss of her husband</a> and the moment she found out Dorn had died while she slept at home:

(Tillman, a safety for the Arizona Cardinals, was named to Paul Zimmerman of Sports Illustrated’s 2000 NFL All-Pro team; eight months after 9/11, he left his NFL career and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004.)
Eilert added, “And each game thereafter, I am going to write another person’s name from the United States military, whether active, retired, killed or missing in action, or a prisoner of war. Dorn’s wife, St. Louis police Sgt. Ann Marie Dorn, told the St. Louis Dispatch that her husband was friends with the owner of the pawn shop and regularly came to the owner’s aid whenever alarms went off.
Dorn retired from the St. Louis police force in October 2007 after serving 38 years. His close friend on the force, St. Louis County police Chief Tim Fitch, who knew Dorn for 30 years, told the media that Dorn and his wife helped disadvantaged youth while he was on the force.</blockquote>

Perhaps the most powerful moment at either the Republican or Democrat convention was the 5 minute <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ann-dorn-republican-national-convention-speech-david-dorn-killed-in-st-louis-protests/">speech</a> delivered by Ann Dorn, widow of David Dorn, the retired police captain gunned down by rioters in St. Louis. In the short address on the final night of the RNC, Ann described the events of that fateful night in May. To hear it from her perspective is to understand that the term &#8220;rioting&#8221; is not an abstract concept but an actual human tragedy and injustice that destroys the lives of real people.
We should pay special attention to Ann&#8217;s explanation as to how her elderly husband ended up downtown late at night during violent riots. She explained that David was a longtime friend of the owner of a pawnshop and had agreed to oversee security for the store as a favor. As the city descended into chaos, David decided to go to the store to keep the looters away. One of the looters, carrying a stolen television, shot Dorn dead. His dying moments were live streamed on Facebook.
The story is harrowing and infuriating, but it also sheds light on the admirable character of the victim. This one detail alone — that Dorn would leave his home in the middle of the night and brave the violent mobs just to help a friend — tells you everything you need to know about him. He was, it is obvious, a thoroughly decent man, and far more courageous than the average person. His death should provoke deep outrage and sadness in anyone who hears of it.

But here is the startling fact. A great many people in this country do not really feel very outraged by David Dorn’s death at all. They do not consider it an injustice worthy of much attention, let alone mass protest. There are those in this country who seem to be specially enraged by death when it happens to violent criminals who assault police or resist arrest. The murder of the good and the innocent, on the other hand, seems not to trouble them very much. It is difficult for a well adjusted person to understand such a mentality, but it is indeed the mentality of many Americans.
There are consequences to this. As human beings, we emulate our heroes. We follow in the footsteps of those we have appointed as our leaders. We are inspired and motivated by whichever martyrs we choose to raise up and honor.
What happens, then, when we tear down the statues of our historical icons, and choose to ignore modern day heroes like David Dorn, and instead honor men like George Floyd and Jacob Blake? Floyd was a violent criminal and drug abuser who once forced his way into a woman’s home and put a gun to her stomach. He died while high on<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/medical-examiner-concluded-george-floyd-likely-died-of-fentanyl-overdose-court-docs-reveal"> potentially lethal doses of Fentanyl</a> and resisting arrest. Jacob Blake was apparently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/walsh-police-scanner-audio-of-jacob-blake-shooting-released-calls-into-question-media-narrative">intimidating</a> his girlfriend when the cops arrived to arrest him on a warrant for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/walsh-before-you-honor-jacob-blake-as-a-martyr-read-the-criminal-complaint-against-him">domestic abuse and sexual abuse</a>. Why should they be the names that our whole country cries out in grief while relegating a name like David Dorn to a lesser status?

Of course, just because someone was a bad guy that doesn’t automatically make their death or injury at the hands of police justified. That justification, or lack of justification, arises from their behavior and the choices they make in the moment when police are trying to arrest them.
It should be possible to make the case that a man&#8217;s death or injury was wrong without canonizing him in the process. But we do not walk that line in our culture today. The names of men killed by police are spoken with religious reverence, and their murals and likenesses adorn our cities. We make them into role models. We build them into myths. We elevate them. And in elevating the George Floyds of the world, while ignoring the David Dorns, we end up with more George Floyds and fewer David Dorns. That is a tragedy of its own.

Ann Dorn, the wife of slain <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/retired-police-captain-was-murdered-while-protecting-his-friends-pawn-shop-during-riots-widow-says">former St. Louis Police Captain David Dorn</a>, called on governors and mayors to accept federal help in putting down violent riots after recounting the painful night that her husband was killed.
Ann spoke at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, the fourth and final night of the proceedings. Her husband, a 44-year veteran of law enforcement, died on June 2 while defending a friend’s pawnshop from rioters who were defacing and destroying property and looting businesses across the city. The riots broke out following protests over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.
Ann recounted that David, a “friend to thousands,” once befriended a young man named Lee. The two bonded, and when Lee decided to start his own business and open a pawn shop, he asked David to help with security. David became the de facto man in charge of checking out the shop any time the alarm bell went off.
“Most of the time they were false alarms triggered by a storm or animals, but I never rested easily until I heard Dave’s key turn in the door knowing he was home safe,” Ann said.
“The alarm that went off the morning of June 2 was for real,” she continued, her voice cracking slightly as she began to recount her husband’s final moments.
She continued:
<blockquote>It was a violent night in St. Louis. Four officers were shot, others were hit with rocks and fireworks. At least five businesses were damaged, looted, or set on fire. As the Officer Wellness coordinator and CIT coordinator with the police department, I was keenly aware of the rioting, and I spent the evening getting ready to mobilize support for officers who were impacted.
After I had gone to bed, David received a call from Lee’s alarm company. The front door of the pawn shop had been breached. This time, he didn’t wake me up to tell me. He probably knew I would have tried to stop him, or insist on going with him. As I slept, looters were ransacking the shop. They shot and killed David in cold blood, and then live-streamed his execution and his last moments on Earth. David’s grandson was watching the video on Facebook in real time, not realizing he was watching his own grandfather dying on the sidewalk.
I learned of all this around 4 a.m. when our doorbell rang. The chief of police was standing outside. I wondered why Dave had not answered the door. It wasn’t uncommon for him to be up watching TV at this time. I called out to him several times; there was no reply. He just wasn’t there. I let in the chief, and fighting back tears, he uttered the words every officer’s spouse dreads.</blockquote>
Ann said that she hoped David’s story would help end the rioting, looting, and destruction that has surged in the biggest cities across the United States following Floyd’s death amid the coronavirus pandemic.
<blockquote>I relive that horror in my mind every single day. My hope is that having you relive it with me now will help shake this country from this nightmare we are witnessing in our cities, and bring about positive, peaceful change. How did we get to this point where so many young people are callous and indifferent towards human life? This isn’t a video game where you can commit mayhem and then just hit reset and bring all the characters back to life. David is never, never coming back to me. He was murdered by people who didn’t know and just didn’t care he would have done anything to help them.</blockquote>
Ann pleaded with local elected officials to accept aid from the federal government to “help restore order in our communities.”
“In a time when police departments are short on resources and manpower, we need that help. We should accept that help,” Ann said. “We must heal before we can affect change, but we cannot heal amid devastation and chaos. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-honors-retired-st-louis-police-captain-david-dorn-after-he-was-killed-by-despicable-looters-outside-store">President Trump knows we need more Davids</a> in our communities, not fewer. We need to come together in peace and remember that every life is precious.”

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department announced on Sunday that they had made an arrest in connection with the murder of retired Captain David Dorn, who was allegedly murdered by looters last week.
