Whenever there’s a Democrat embroiled in a scandal, the media has a bad habit of letting its left-wing bias seep through. A recent New York Times report on Anthony Weiner is yet another example of this.
On Monday, Alex Griswold of the Washington Free Beacon noticed that the Times report on Weiner being sentenced to 21 months in prison for sexting an underage girl was missing a key piece of information:
The author of the report, Benjamin Weiser, responded to Griswold:
The archives of all the edits of the report show that the report was initially published at 10:53 a.m. EST. At 1:14 pm EST, there was an edit that took out the fact that Weiner is a Democrat. Weiner’s party affiliation was buried in the second-to-last paragraph of the report.
Weiner’s party affiliation was added back in at 9:54 pm EST in the third paragraph, after the report had gone through ten prior edits since Weiner’s party affiliation was “inadvertently dropped.”
Erik Wemple of The Washington Post defended the Times:
However, Daily Caller blogger Jim Treacher noted:
It’s possible Weiser’s edit was an honest mistake, however the Times recently omitted Sen. Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) party affiliation when they initially wrote a report on Menendez’s trial. After a wave of criticism, Menendez’s party affiliation was added, although there was no editor’s note to acknowledge the change. How is it that twice in a month the Times has omitted the party affiliation of a Democrat facing legal trouble?
Even if the initial report on Weiner hadn’t been edited, it still would have been an example of left-wing bias by the sheer fact that Weiner’s party affiliation was buried toward the end of the story. That’s the kind of information that should have been at the beginning of the report from the get-go.
Between this and publishing columns lionizing Weiner and communism, it has not been a good week for The New York Times.
