In the media reports regarding a suspect who allegedly shot up three churches in Tennessee last week, there is a conspicuous omission- the suspect had converted to Islam.
As the Times-Gazette reported on Tuesday, Wendell Buchanan was arrested last Saturday afternoon for allegedly shooting into three churches: Horse Mountain Church of Christ, Philippi Methodist Church and Singleton United Methodist Church, all in Shelbyville, Tennessee. The Times-Gazette reported the incidents without mentioning Buchanan’s conversion:
"Several deputies were at the church talking with members," Detective Sgt. Scott Jones of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office said Saturday night. "We were given a good description of the suspect's car … Wendell Buchanan drove by while they were there and Officer Tory Moore of the Shelbyville Police Department, who was patrolling in the area, stopped him on Highway 437 (the Shelbyville bypass)." When asked if Buchanan had given a reason for his actions, Jones said Monday the investigation hadn't yet reached that point. "We're still talking to him," Jones said. "This is a joint investigation between the city and county. We've worked together from the start."
As New English Review reported, the three churches were shot up starting on the night of Sep 27, 2016. The Horse Mountain Church of Christ was shot 16 more times the night of Sep 29. The Philippi United Methodist Church, along with another church, was also struck by 7.62 x 39 rounds on the 29th.
New English Review reported Buchanan had posted his Islamic views on Facebook, posts that were later scrubbed clean. The post read:
Friends and family of Facebook I’ve been granted knowledge of the unseen world as a mercy from my Lord Allah … Hell is real and obtained through sin without repentance and unbelief … Most don’t believe Allah (god) will condemn his creation in such a manner but this is false because his will and word are the ultimate and truth. Please believe me when I tell you I’m not making up conjecture just to get attention on Facebook. I’m just doing my job as a messenger for my Lord as a warning to you from amongst you on this social media outlet … Read the Qur’an because it is the true word of God and seek guidance for a better understanding.
In 2010, the Times-Gazette ran a series of articles detailing the troubles triggered by a large influx of Somali Muslim immigrants who had migrated to Shelbyville.
