In the first days after the sexual assault allegations against Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein hit the headlines, the late-night comedians steered clear. They got hammered for their silence.
But that was before the allegations spiraled out of control. At first, there were charges that Weinstein wanted women to watch him shower or massage him. Now, several have accused the powerful producer of rape.
Not exactly funny.
That didn't stop James Corden, a British comedian who hosts the Late, Late Show. Hosting the annual gala for AmfAR (the American Foundation for AIDS Research, so, also not exactly funny), Corden told a bunch of jokes that drew groans from the Hollywood glitterati in attendance.
"It’s a beautiful night here in L.A. — so beautiful, Harvey Weinstein has already asked tonight up to his hotel to give him a massage.”
OK, that might have been funny on Day 1 of the ever-widening scandal. But the story has grown daily, and now some 36 women have come out to allege Weinstein sexually abused them in one way or another — several now say they were raped.
The audience could be heard groaning after the joke, and Corden got defensive, urging the moaners they should "probably leave now” if they didn’t find the joke funny. Then, it got worse.
“It has been weird this week though, watching Harvey Weinstein in hot water. Ask any of the women who watched him take a bath.” Groans.
Corden then joked about claims made by TV anchor Lauren Sivan, who charged that Weinstein masturbated in front of her and ejaculated into a potted plant.
"Harvey Weinstein wanted to come tonight, but he’ll settle for whatever potted plant is closest.”
As more groans filled the lavish hall, Corden said, "Oh, c'mon!" See the jokes below.
Twitterers didn't find the gags very amusing.
Once again, it just goes to show how incredibly tone deaf Hollywood can be.
